It does not need a key or a structure or form which allows 'artists' to get away with anything. When it is used as a backdrop to a more familiar/conventional structure it can be very effective. Mr Wakeman comes to mind here. (Think of the abstract keyboard passages on 'Tales from Topographic Oceans').
