i dont think there is too much music available, i try to listen to as much as i can,especially recommendations from members here and a couple of people i know who have some sort of musical interest.
if i find a track i like i backtrack and listen to other tracks by that artist, if it moves me enough i have no hesitation in buying one of their cd's, even if it is a "best of" set as an introduction.
i also make a point of finding out who my favourite artists listen to see who is/has influenced them, some of which i like, others i dont. i'd rather listen to 9 crap bands to find the 10th one good than be totally stuck in the past.
