MP3 files compress the music, and discard large components of the audio signal to make the file sizes manageable from the point of storage. The lowest quality MP3 files discard up to 90% of the original information. This isn't as drastic as it might sound, since most of the discarded signal is what would be regarded as relatively unimportant signal components.

Lossless files are supposed to be just that, where most or all of the original information is retained.
