MOON MARTIN "mystery ticket" 1982. vinyl
Moon was born in Oaklahoma in 1950, he started in a rockabilly outfit in the early 1970s, from there hew became a session musician, by 1977 he was ready to go it solo and do his own thing, his first release contained a song called "bad case of lovin' you" which was later recorded by Robert Palmer, who incidently produced this album.
the US music media heaped critical acclaim upon Moon, even to the extent of making comparisons between him and Elvis Costello/Nick Lowe, however critical acclaim does not neccessarily lead to record sales, as was the case with Moon Martin.
a lot of this album sounds as though Robert Palmer could have sung these songs,a couple of exceptions being the 1950s sounding "she's in love with my car" and "paid the price". "dont you double(cross me baby)" is very country/pop crossover, and "aces with you" has shades of ELO to it. i also hear shades of Tom Petty in these songs.
overall, there is the distinct sound of dated 1980s synths.
its the first time since probably 1984ish that ive actually listened to this album, and it fairs better in the rating than i still think it deserves, but thats obviously how ive graded it today, not even sure why i bought this one, there were no hits from it and the album didnt trouble the charts either, i guess the singles (x-ray vision & aces with you) got a lot of airplay at the time???
worst track: deeper(into love)
