What got me hooked on world music was Dead Can Dance. Their not exactly world music, more like ethnic ethereal or whatever crappy name you choose to call it. I don't care.
What's cool is Rodrigo y Gabriela (latin acoustic guitar), Babatunde Olatunji (african drumming stuff), Etran Finatawa (some call it desert blues. whatever...), Renaud Garcia-Fons (arabian), Madlib's Madlib Medicine Show No. 2 Flight to Brazil.
If you like it more freaked out I recommend Master Musicians of Bukakke's Totem One and Totem Two. And you've got to check out Moondog's album Moondog (the one from 1956). Or you could just go to your local pedestrian area and listen to some ludicrous peruvian flutebands.
