New Music Friday Summary & Review 27.12.24 #12

Hannah Montana - Ice Spice/NLE Choppa/DaBaby (3/10)
From the deluxe version of Y2K, this is somehow worse than the pushed singles from the original album. Ice Spice is just famous for twerking and using other big names to level herself up, and I sure damn hope she never charts again. But somehow, the next day another big name features on her track, and her fifteen minutes of fame restart. The artists on this don’t even go together, and they’re all talentless! Goodness, DaBaby had a bad fall-off, but this low is insane. It’s New York synthetic drill that drills into my brain cells. With parts using autotune and others without, this is just a pile of garbage that sounds childish and uninteresting.

Pitorro De Coco - Bad Bunny (5/10)
I mean, it’s alright. It has Bunny's usual sound, with the guitar fitting in nicely alongside his Myke Towers-like voice merging into it. The problem for me is that it feels way too boring and just doesn’t have that earworm sound that makes a track replayable. Nothing special.

THAT GUY - Tyler, The Creator (9/10)
Remixing Kendrick Lamar's Hey Now, That Guy possibly does it better! Tyler picked the correct song to fit his style and added even more of his flair to it. Honestly, he’s been releasing such good music this year that he might actually become That Guy! It really was a Christmas present and something that adds to the rap-trap scene of 2024. (I reviewed the original Hey Now, and you can view that in my review of GNX by Kendrick.)

Luck Ra: Bzrp Music Sessions Vol. 61 - Bizarrap/Luck Ra (5.5/10)
I started off not liking this much but slowly got into the Latin pop-house vibe. It has a fun club sound while offering lyrics that say something. As much as I’m not sure if they’re the best match for a foreigner, this’ll still sound alright. Luck Ra has a sound that could fit on a number-one song—I feel like he’d fit well on Despacito.

Santa Baby - Kim Kardashian (3/10)
Starting the music video with the 44-year-old crawling on the floor, Kim Kardashian tries to portray the Christmas spirit in full as she mocks Jesus Christ, showcases drinking and drugs, and uses an old recorder in a horror-like setting to try and recreate The Shining. The music video blocks out the noise and leaves you wanting to never come back. Putting this one song on would completely ruin a good mood. I don’t know how anyone could view this as good. Combining eerie with Santa—really? This is a mockery to everyone, and Kim should be ashamed.

QUÉ QUIERES DE MI? - Myke Towers/Eladio Carrión (3/10)
My ears hated this. It just sounded so unoriginal and was straight loudness rushing painfully into my ear. The backbeat, which gets overlapped, doesn’t complement the vocals and makes it sound messy. The deep vocal touch tries to go for a hard-hitting feel but fails miserably, ruining the song even more. Everything from the production's baseline to the annoying beat is a miss.

Ballin - NLE Choppa (5.5/10)
It’s the one-in-a-million time where Choppa drops a song that’s actually listenable—never thought the day would come! It heads for more of a slower R&B swing that sounds easier on the ears while keeping rap’s modern-day roots. Y'know, this is more like the NLE I wanna see.

Drama - Rex Orange County (5/10)
Becoming the final track on Rex's The Alexander Technique, Drama is good but just isn’t too good. Its simple beat, combined with the vocal melody, is notable for a busker performance, but as this is from a real artist with a name, it’s just missing flavor. I truthfully don’t know what it needs, but it’s just mid.

Kick The Nation - Lost Frequencies/Pickle (3.5/10)
This is such a usual, generic, lifeless track that matches the levels of modern-day David Guetta. I see why Frequencies’ support has toned down to near none—I can’t imagine living off these beats. What an effortless job!

Appetite - Great Good Fine Ok (6/10)

Cynthoni Of Flames - Cynthoni (4/10)
Tiring and too repetitive.

Good Will Hunting (Black Country, New Roads) - Wilbur (3.5/10)
A country song muffled through a phone recorder mentioning Billie Eilish was not on my 2024 bingo card.

Today I Lay Down - Ace Of Thorns (2.5/10)
Okay... this may have been a tribute song to someone who died, but I’m not a user who rates off sympathy. The production is still unorganized, with vocals that aren’t properly heard and sound mixed somewhere in the background. Nothing about this really impressed me, and I think people are only rating it high as a tribute to the dead artist.

Jitnunkebi (Winter Song) - Asian Glow (5/10)

Date Night - Lil Shine (3/10)
This has some of the most disgusting lines ever and sounds like autotuned modern rap crap—but somehow made worse.

Same - Turnabout (2/10)
