Our President likely has a red nuke button he could push whenever necessary and powerful enough to blow countries like Iraq and Iran off the map. However, I think what has driven some of our last few President's to hunt WMDs in other countries is the possibility of powerful ones falling into the hands of terrorists. The invention of nukes has changed the game of warfare to even greater heights than ever before, IMO. Sigh.

I think one of the reasons 9/11 was as jarring as it was is the fact that most of us Americans think we are safe from attacks and foreign threats, but 9/11 reminds us then and now that we can be still be hurt. To be honest, we are probably more likely to be killed by homegrown terrorists who can make weapons at home regardless of their ethnicity, religion, etc than we are by outside threats right now.
