So, I had a listen to this new album and this is my initial take ⦠things might change! I listened before reading any reviews at all, which is the only way to do it, IMHO. There is a disclaimer, of course: this is subject (the key word) to my inexpert opinion and personal taste! â¦.
Essentially, I love âFaces of Stoneâ, âIn Any Tongueâ, âTodayâ, and âAnd Thenâ. I rated each track, and overall the album scores a 6.6 from me (out of ten). I really donât like âThe Girl in the Yellow Dressâ â feels very dated to me and sounds laboured, and out of place. Nine tracks wouldâve done quite nicely, I believe. Other than that, I so much enjoyed the PF references but was a bit bothered by the lack of structure which seems apparent in one too many places. Thereâs a lot of fading out and a fair amount of noodling, which is all very well, and which I donât mind at all, IF thereâs an integral framework in place to hold such noodling; and there is, on âFaces of Stoneâ, for example, which is perfectly timed â even the intro. However, on some other tracks â itâs a wasteland.
Altogether, Iâm still loving Gilmourâs guitar, who wouldnât? But Iâm not loving his loss of vocal luminosity, and that was always the point with his voice â almost like a halo around it. Fortunately, he never overdoes it to the point of shrieking, but itâs getting oh so close.
Oh, and I'll be adding to my collection.
