A factoid about Lou Rawls: when he'd play a week in Atlantic City, he would at his own expense have built a stage at a nearby Air Force Base and play a full concert. All band and singer expenses coming out of his own pocket. He may have done the same elsewhere (playing Nellis AFB when doing a week in Las Vegas, e.g.). Hell of a guy, sorely missed.
About all 3 singers mentioned: cruise AMG Discogs with an open mind--all 3 have surprising albums> Mr. Rawls, for example, has this, a particular fave of mine: http://www.allmusic.com/album/portrait-o...0000617870 and a song or two from it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERLI4vI9Jxg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFft947gBkM (what a sax break on this~!)<< he started as a blues/deep R&B singer and that inflected all his singing--this CD just brings that to the fore.

A man accustomed to hear only the echo of his own sentiments, soon bars all the common avenues of delight, and has no part in the general gratification of mankind--Dr. Johnson
