Turntable Question
#1
I have a dumb question. I am thinking about a new cartridge and head shell for my Sanyo turntable. My cartridge now, is a 1/2 inch standard cartridge. Do I need to try and find a Sanyo cartridge or will any standard Cartridge work? I am assuming any standard cartridge will work but I am not sure. Also, does anybody use an Ortofon cartridge, I have heard much good about the Ortofon 2M Red. ....Thank you, Bob

There's no point buying the best cartridges if the sound system is very good, as the output is only as good as the combined components....

Agreed. He could prolly do with a whole-system upgrade, starting with the TT (not least to do less damage to his vinyl). However working with what we have to work with...One of those ATs should do you just fine, as they are just the "better". Minor disagreement: the output can be no better than the combined components; that output is usually hobbled by the least components. That's why you get clearer sound at lesser volume with higher quality components--laws of diminishing returns apply, natch. More signal, less noise.

Ain't no big thing as long as our combined advice was correct...and it was.

Thank you for the advice! My turntable sounds very good, it is powered by a 45 watt per channel Pioneer receiver from the late 1970's. My Sanyo has an old Empire cartridge but the needle is still good.
I am thinking about a new head shell because because I read some good things about the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge and the sound it produces. I was just thinking that a back up cartridge might be a good idea. Thank you both again for all the information and advice! ....Best wishes, Bob

Again with the shouting--really Bro? About the state of the old cartridge: Had it under a microscope? Or has your hearing just adjusted? Cartridges and headshells are certainly aligned products but really have little to do with each other--equal quality is understood. Good luck with your quest--over and out.
