So a friend showed me this band the other day called UneXpecT. And I love them. Being a violinist myself who was also really into metal growing up (origin, meshuggah, etc) it's really satisfying to hear a violin that works so well within the band and isn't just for the symphonic factor.
Our discussion that day was really interesting, so I thought I would bring it here as well. We were talking about how this music, maybe even within the metal genre, but even as a whole, isn't particularly mainstream and how different the world would be if it was. His words were tainted with a hint of longing for it being that way, which I can understand, but I actually think it's kind of a good thing.
To me it almost feels like an exclusive club, and if it were mainstreme it might lose that edge. Not that I would stop listening to it if it did, nor to say I don't wish any more success on the band that they already have, but can you imagine the mainstream culture? Everyone would have steam-punk themed computer rigs and constantly be talking about anime. Ok.. that would be kind of cool.. but it might feel less genuine, and there might be a lot more people tagging along for the ride simply because it's in.
So, what do you think? Would you prefer a world like this, or are you happy that it's kind of a niche sub-culture? Do you like the band? Did I post this thread in the right place? All questions I'd like to discuss

Welcome aboard the Great MD, nimbus! Yes you have posted in the right place and I'm glad you did! Avant garde metal is one of my favourite genres, bands tend to release interesting music with phenomenal musicianship and composition!
Some of the bands I like are: Agalloch, Devin Townsend Project, Voivod, Shining ( the Norwegian band ), Diablo Swing Orchestra, Ulver, Blut Aus Nord. just to name a few, there are many more out there!

Man, avant-garde is good, but it's so hard to find a band that has actual commitment to their riffs and doesn't change themes every single or other one bar.
Also, SteveO... Voivod avant-garde? It's psychodelic\regular\vaguely punk rock, but... I saw your post about nu metal and I think you're sometimes trying to match bands to genres instead of the other way around.
But maybe I'm horribly wrong.

As for nu metal those bands fit the bill do they not? Like I said a lot of nu metal is very commercial, contradicts the true meaning of metal music! What are some other nu metal bands that are not on the list that are fairly well known!

Hey thanks SteveO! I'll be sure to check out those other guys along my travels (when I have a better internet connection...sigh...), especially Voivoid though, that's awesome that Bela Bartok is one of their influences! I'm thinking I could really get into this genre!
What do you mean by "contradicts the true meaning of metal music!" I'm curious, I always thought metal evolved from roots of jazz/blues way back and along that timeline of rock n' roll until what we have today, simply because of a growing desire for more heaviness in the music. I mean it definitely makes sense, seenalongside the punchy, in your face rebellion of rock and punk. So are you saying that metal as a whole has undertones of anti-selling out?

Yes, some so called metal bands are obviously trying to make millions from mainstream poppish hard rock or what they call metal! You are correct in stating that metal evolved from jazz and blues , and classical to a greater extent. If you listen to some interviews of metal music musicians, they tend to be highly intelligent, very well versed in all music genres and somewhat intellectual in most cases!
