It's not my fav genre but whenever it is mentioned, for me John Denver will always be my fav singer in the country category.....I really love his songs......a great songwriter, singer and above all a great voice!

2 stars for me.
Listen to quite a bit of Alt-Country, though. Don't like line-dancing music, sequins, sentimentality, or dressing like a cowboy. That rules out a lot of probably OK Country music...

I don't actually own a lot of country records but I do listen to a weekly radio show. It comes on one of the local college radio stations every Tuesday night. I do listen regularly so I went with the three stars.
I like classic country. The masters. Also those masters that are still making records. I haven't run across much contemporary country that I like, but then I don't look too hard.

It's a shame what is happening to Country! Only a few newer artists are what I would consider Country.

A very good traditional country artist is Iris Dement...and Eric Church's Live album ...I enjoy ! It's difficult to find contemporary traditional country artists. Rebel!

This genre has been bought and totally taken over by corporate interests. If you want music that genuinely represents the feelings of rural America, look at the "Americana" category--this stuff is bullshit pop with a twang and nothing more...unless you think so little of rural people as to think this is what their legitimate concerns are. I don't.
