Totally agree and good on you for posting. ONE OF THE JAZZ RECORDS--One of about 5 discs I'd give someone who sincerely wants to know,"What's jazz all about?".

Cheating a bit on this by picking my personal choices from this most excellent listing BUT:
Kind of Blue --Miles Davis << My personal fave--all the elements that made Mr. Davis, Mr. Davis and tuneful too...Sketches of Spain as well
A Love Supreme--John Coltrane << quite complex; not for someone new to jazz
Getz/Gilberto--Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto << I personally prefer his previous bossa nova outing with Charlie Byrd, Jazz Samba--all these brought the Latin element into jazz big-time in a very accessible but truly jazz way
Mingus Ah Um--Charles Mingus << he was a genius and this mixes politics and art in a way only he could--can be complex but swings his cheeks off too

NOTE: One on this list (At Carnegie Hall by John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk) was just discovered and issued 8 years ago, and the Modern Jazz Quartet had important concert material from the '50's in Germany discovered, polished and burnished, and issued just 2 months ago (MJQ--The Lost Tapes).

Dan Fogelberg's Love in Time. He completed the album close to the last stages of his illness, and put it away with instructions for his wife to release it posthumously, which she did. Another multi-instrumentalist and talented singer/songwriter gone too soon. I've been listening to his back catalogue as well as to Love in Time ... very easy on the ear ... bittersweet ...

Still with Dan Fogelberg - this time his beautiful Nether Lands album; something of an early tour de force IMHO. A couple of collaborators who appear on this one are Don Henley and Joe Walsh (who was actually pivotal in getting Dan’s music out there) – in fact all the Eagles were supporters at one time or another. Many musical luminaries such as Joni Mitchell, Emmylou, Russ Kunkel and David Lindley contributed to some of his other work, as did Jackson Browne who held DF in high regard. That’s good enough for me!

Apart from being able to play virtually any instrument, he had an impressive vocal range which I hadn’t really appreciated up to now. Nether Lands is best listened to in its entirety, but here’s an extract anyway –

another birthday gift card purchase from a while ago,already played but not posted, so here goes....
i bought this one the day it was released purely on the strength of that "lady is a tramp" duet they did on his "duets" album a couple of years ago...
Bennett,despite being 85 years of age has lost none of his class or vocal ability.
Gaga proves there really is a talented side to her, she could almost make a career out of this type of music, but the reality is, the big money is in the pop market and so are the audiences for concert shows...
i even dare go as far as saying her vocal range,strengths and punctuation of the lines is about as close to Liza Minelli as you could get...
album is filled with old jazz,blues,crooner standards here and both carry them off proffessionally.
my version of the album is the deluxe version with three or four extra tracks over the standard release, i got this one because that "lady is a tramp" is one of the bonus songs.
all up a very very good album and IMO i think Gaga should do more of this kind of material in the future and maybe she will, especially since her last album "pop art" failed so badly in the charts compared to her previous albums

It was Irma who did the 'original' of Pain in My Heart - Ruler of My Heart.

A platinum album gives you license to do whatever you want. Sinead chose the covers route with this standards album which was a risky move so
early in her career. Sales were dismal compared to her Grammy winning last effort. Her commercial appeal had dropped off after some
controversial comments. The standout track for me here is her cover of Don't Cry For Me Argentina which did not even chart here. On the other
end the closing instrumental of the same song sounds nothing like the vocal version and her version of Love Letters does nothing for the
original. And lastly her rant against the catholic church need not have been shared.

Why not? Didn't you say earlier in this post that she had license to speak her mind freely? The larger issue: She only was discussing the ROMAN CATHOLIC church--the Eastern Orthodox has a great millions of adherents about which Ms. O'Connor and we know nothing.
