Neil Young has revealed heâll release Storytone in November â an album heâs recorded with a 92-piece orchestra.
And to mark the announcement, the veteran musician has released two more takes of his latest track
Whoâs Gonna Stand Up?
He issued a
live version earlier this month to draw attention to documentary
Under The Influence. Now heâs launched acoustic and orchestral takes. Hear them below.
In March, Young indicated he would like to record with an orchestra, saying the sound would be âunbelievable.â
He told
Billboard: âIâd like to make a record with a full-blown orchestra live â a mono recording with one mic. I want to do something like that where we really record what happened, with one point of view and the musicians moved closer and further away, the way it was done in the past.
âTo me, thatâs a challenge and itâs a sound thatâs unbelievable. You canât get it any other way.â
Storytone will be Youngâs 35th album and his second release this year, following
A Letter Home which appeared in April.

ok,opinion time from the Young-phile of MD......
firstly, this will be his fifth album since 2011 following the abysmal Daniel Lanoise produced "le noise", the Crazy Horse covers set "americana", the double Crazy Horse "psychadelic pill" and this years worse than abysmal covers set "a letter home"....
its not the first time Neil has used an orchestra(or parts of an orchestra), he used one on his "harvest" set in the early 1970s....
from one listen, i dont think the linked track above is great but its a vast improvement on the majority of material he has released on the above mentioned albums...
and yet again, Young does his usual unexpected about turn to release something no one expected of him...
it cant be any worse than "a letter home",which BTW, i have not bought because it was so bad!
and looking foreward to hearing the whole project when its released!

Neil could release just about anything, and it would sell, so it's good to see him pushing himself a bit.

Had a listen to this and for once I do not have an opinion - can't tell whether I like it or not??!!?? Don't know if this is good or bad - maybe it's the mix of Neil's voice and the orchestra - something I would normally like, but I am not sure about this one.

I like the track...the orchestral accompaniment is a good match for Neil!

I second the emotion and would love to have a mono/orchestral recording from Neil. I do a lot of headphone listening and mono or binaural is the way to go for headphones.
