What Are You Listening To?
rebelgirl Wrote:I watched the Dean Martin show every week. He loved country music and sang it very well. I think the first time I saw Kris was on his show. He sang Why Me Lord.
Assuming you meant Kris Kristofferson. Hope this brings back some happy memories: [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNrwjR4guHI"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNrwjR4guHI

Outstanding lead/writer in Chrissie Hynde, and only 1 turkey disc in their career (and that was 24 years ago). Came back strongly in '08 with Break Up the Concrete. The Pretenders are worthy of further and deeper examination. Here's that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL8Dj5xOjm0 and remastered: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go6hxH4UnFE Coke and/or heroin did in the guys hence this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmvrXHLAtmI << I've lost folks to it--maybe you have too. How much wit and talent can you pack in one brain? 'Cuz Ms. Barber sure pushes against any limits.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Barber
She is Chicago-centric, playing mainly at that marvelous venue, The Green Mill--you listening, Sister Mary? How about some more? Oh hell yes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J8uHjFaZ...Zs8SeXK1BU Advisory: This is nothing like as breezy and accessible as the previously quoted piece...but the work is so worth it. All her albums are 4-star outings (I use that word advisedly); here's what AMG says about this one: [URL="http://www.allmusic.com/album/verse-mw0000223867"]http://www.allmusic.com/album/verse-mw0000223867

Ryuichi Sakomoto - Mototronic - pure bloody genius - one minute it's classical, next it's pop, then it's epic movie soundtrack, then it's bossa nova. Absolutely brilliant. And if ever you want some music to chill out with in the evening, his solo piano works are mesmerizing. A master of surprise.

BTW, Tom Jones once said that engelbert and john farnham have the best voices he has ever heard...!

He hates the term "crooner"; he calls himself a " contemporary singer, a stylized performer". " I can hit notes a bank couldn't cash", says he. BTW, he can call himself only Engelbert in Germany; the family of the original EH (a 19th century composer) has enjoined him there. Started music as a saxophonist, only later moving to singer.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engelbert_H...8singer%29

Chris Rea has to be one of the most underrated/under-appreciated singer/songwriter/guitarists in popular music IMO...
i have five albums and either love or almost love all of them...yet he never really set any charts alight in his career...
this album is typical easy listening/soft rock type stuff that we expect off Chris, lots of lovely melodies, lyrics and vocals also...
Chris(as i just found out via wikipedia) was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2001 and defied all the odds to survive this normally lethal disease...
in 2005 he retired from making solo records but still occasionally pops up on other peoples albums and still occasionally tours with Memphis Fireflies...
but, all up a very good album from a very good artist

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

As I also love Engelbert and Tom Jones, John Rowles has one of those era power voices.

If you have never heard of him, look for a you tube song " Cheryl Moana Marie "

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:this is Bobby Darin a million miles away from his stupid "splish, splash" debut a couple of years before

Your feelings to the contrary, it was a good period piece, he co-wrote it and never disavowed it. For the younger among us here's that one and another one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSA-yHzkvP8 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVHAQX5sSaU << Every time I hear this, I'm a mess for the next hour. He wrote this one too.
BTW, how would anybody react on finding out at 32 that those 2 folks who raised you were really your grandparents and that woman you thought was your sister was really your mother? Profound depression, I'm thinking.
Much later addition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZUMuYVJmTM << a full showing how masterful a showman he was

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:Bobby only spent a year or two as a pop-idol, i prefer his crooner stuff better overall, even though this album's score doesnt reflect that, also, shame he died so young, he had so much more music to offer the world IMO

Ricky Lee...
i love about half that debut album, the rest(from memory) wasnt that good, but the 5cd set for a single disc price...cant really go too far wrong overall i guess
i agree on the 'sharp decline' comment you made also

Very polarizing artist is Ms. Jones--love her or hate her; there's no in-between. Her fans are rabid as shown by the fan ratings on AMG. She did have a reasonable covers album 2 years ago (not redemption but perhaps palliation): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAF_qVu7P...sm&index=1 << you can wipe the spit off the screen now.
BTW, she has a song called "We Belong Together". Silly me--I thought it was this: [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVRTCKTJU5Q"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVRTCKTJU5Q
Another BTW--How much did you get when selling that 5 CD box? Inquiring minds want to know...
