This is a great article, jazzboCR! It really did a good job of illustrating how John and Paul *needed* each other in order to create the music they did, and I'd not read a lot about their backgrounds, so that was informative. I've always thought that in order to hit some kind of center, there have to be extremes. It's not a particularly original thought, but it seems to be one that I consistently point out to people who argue extremes. *laughs* Thank you for pointing me to this article, jazzbo!!

I'm wondering if they actually will step in, jazzbo. The EDM industry is a $6 billion industry with major corporate sponsors, and after looking at a 1996 NIH study about drug and alcohol use at rock concerts, it doesn't appear that much has changed with regard to alcohol/drug usage at concerts. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8669733 My guess is that the media will make a big fuss over this, but it will be swept under the rug when EDM events are offered to cities/venues. The sound of money....

Being on the classics lists I was expecting better. Considering his age at the time (25), gotta give Mailer some kudos though. World War II novel set on an island off of Japan. The U.S. needs the airstrip and we're coming in to save the uninhabited island from the Japs. Most of the book follows this one recon patrol and their quest to ascend the highest peak. I guess they want the view. They encounter little opposition. In fact very little of the book details any actual combat. A couple of the guys get knocked off and one falls off a cliff. The rest go back to the base and party after the hike.

You have to read 'The Executioner's Song' - a book that made my non-existent hair stand on end. A riveting read.

Richard A. Clarke - Against All Enemies - 2004
Headed various departments under the 3 presidents on the cover. Resigned under the last Bush over the Iraq war, then wrote this insiders view of the war on terror. About the first 2/3's of the book were pretty interesting. Then came the Bush bashing. Every decision that was made was wrong. All well and good. A lot of the criticism is warranted. So easy to see mistakes that were made after the fact. Has nothing but praise for policies under Clinton. Go figure that after his resignation he shows up as a regular on all the MSNBC talking head shows. If you enjoy Bush bashing, read this.

Had to counter the previous liberal bias with some conservative bias. A view of Bush's first term from a Fox news analyst. Have to be fair and balanced, right?

I recently read this article and thought it was both timely and interesting. As an educator, I completely agree with the assertion that coding is the language of the 21st century and that in the next decade it will become part of the core curriculum. What do you IT folks think about this?

Way too much time on the train ride to and from work this Summer, so I finally made the plunge and tried an e-book.
"Power, Passion, and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra" by Walter Kolosky
Speaking strictly from a writing standpoint, its not anything special. The organization is kind of weird, there's way too many exclamation points for my liking, it comes across like a high schooler wrote it. But, in terms of what's in there? Kolosky scoured the Earth and has a ton of info. Its a really enjoyable read in that sense. So long as you like the Mahavishnu Orchestra. If you don't, you probably won't care to read it (which should be kind of obvious anyway).
