What Are You Listening To?

Van's umpteenth album, released in 2005.

Not really a Blues or Jazz album, but there are some good Blues & Jazz tracks, so this is a best fit.

Sumptuously recorded set of songs with Van's usual musical attention to detail. He plays some solid Sax & Harmonica, and his vocals show no signs of deterioration.

Fine album, if not significantly different to many of his more recent efforts.

RoviMusic 4/5 stars.

Like he said, no particular style, which is one of the reasons AMG is so high on it. No concept or style in mind: http://www.allmusic.com/album/magic-time-mw0000655599
Here's an '08 TV concert demonstrating some...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-lOyh5wBEk << click-throughs to individual songs--nice touch by the uploader

Now this is some solid blues. He's definitely got some major guitar chops, and his voice is certialy fit to sing the blues, but what really makes this work is the soul influence. It gives the music an extra touch of life I feel is missing in some older blues

The unmistakable cool jazzy voice of Michael Franks jazz singer extraordinaire. Music Head reviewed this album awhile ago and I immediately put it on my to listen to list. I spent many hours in the eighties listening to Franks. This is a very good smooth jazz album!

Right about that, the interpreter part. For song-writing credits, check them on AMG but the answer is "No!"
The question and answer were about a Sinatra/ Dorsey compilation (comment 789-790, about page 79)

B.B KING & ERIC CLAPTON "riding with the king" cd,2000.

collaboration of two of "blues rock's" two best known artists and this one doesnt dissapoint(even though im not a bluesy type of guy)
we see the pair of them trading guitar licks and vocals like they have been doing it all their lives...ooops,sorry!, i guess they have!
both are in fine form here and B.B especially shows how good he is at some 70 something years of age,
several covers on here from the 1930s/40s by artists ive never heard of and an interesting cover of soul man Sam & Dave's "hold on,im coming"...
theres something on here for everyone from real slow old time blues through to real raunchy rock & roll blues.
nothing on here i dont like, but at the same time theres nothing i can say i love neither, just an all round good solid album of blues by two of the best in the business!
oh yeh, interesting to note that as youre listening to the album you hear BB and his guitar through one speaker and Eric through the other which gives the impression that these guys are sitting opposite eachother playing/jamming the blues
rating: 2.0
