What Are You Listening To?
Music Head Wrote:Duke liked to refer to jazz as black classical music. In this case, I tend to agree.

Principally, because he made it so--it was not organic growth, like European classical (composers building on centuries of tradition); it was forced growth, propelled by his genius and forcefulness. Also his acceptance of the peccadillos of his players and collaborators.
That good tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBvjPiZ1t6o

Obviously you have to give this old man some respect. Eighty Two years old, first album in 1957. This is the first one since 1998. Coaxed out of retirement by producer Joe Henry.

We owe Joe Henry zero respect for this. I've always enjoyed Mr. Allison's droll Southern-accented humor. He should have benched himself permanently years ago and not listened to false advisors. Here's some that put you more in the picture:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rJqE9ibnfI << too true
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8NwNQ5Rjjo << that melliifluous voice...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5hw9T9Ozv4 << for those unaware, Parchman Farm was an especially brutal Mississippi prison farm--not nice now; imagine it in the '50's...
BONUS: my kind of supergroup--love'm all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOH8WEqWSHI << interview by Jools Holland--28 minutes of pure delight

Amazing, amazing album. I highly recommend it!

Across-the board agreement on this--both listeners and critics all rave: http://www.allmusic.com/album/gently-dis...0000786340
One thing though--there are 2 Avishai Cohens. The other one's a trumpeter and part of a very accomplished musical family: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avishai_Cohen_(trumpeter)

Lady Day copyist. Despite that, this is a good album of Jazzy originals & covers.

I love Billie Holiday, and Peyroux's voice seems so close to hers that it verges on impersonation. Don't usually like things that are too derivative, but Madeleine is a rare exception.

I was surprised to see Vernon Reid from Living Colour plays guitar on this...

To illustrate the point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cQF0uo9uUM << this is more a sort-of Ediath Piaf sound-a-like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhY4m6TFVmM << to be fair, this was done 18 years ago and her first album so maybe shaped by producers, advisors, etc.?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jeeY80n99Q << from an '06 disc so OK not that much change...

Really! Shouldn't he have been doggin' 'round in Muscle Shoals? Tennessee is really 2 states shot-gunned together--we're reminded that eastern Tennessee fought with the Union Army in our (declared) Civil War...and West Virginia was split off from Virginia for the same reason. Nothing should surprise in this area of the country.

You had me going with that "Garbarek is a Norwegian" business...until I read the back-story.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Garbarek << I had no idea--which shows how little that matters. What does matter is brilliance and Mr. Garbarek has a dumptruck load to give away and still smoke many, many others.
As an inside joke, can I sneak this one in? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EUrKOTshIM << I'll use any sleazy excuse to bootleg a BB song in.
