latorius Wrote:Re Nina Simone,
I would suggest a listen to the Albums Forbidden Fruit and Live at the Carnagie Hall, now available on one CD. In particular two outstanding tracks:-
Just say I love him - very unique as Slackmans guitar delicately weaves arround her voice in a gutrenching emotional tale of lost love. Only Judy Collins with "the first boy I loved", from the "who knows where the time goes" has done anything similar.
Trouble in Mind - a blues tour de force with just a trio, but she stamps loud and hard on it. I believe her contribution to the British Blues invasion in largely unacknowledged. Only Alan Price (ex Animals) has acknowledged her influence.
Excellent points made by the OP.

And http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TCCxGi37H4
NOTE: these aren't necessarily the versions the OP named.

Beach Wrote:I have a feeling that this was actually the Miles Davis Quintet at the time (1958). It is certainly listed as part of Miles' discography rather than Cannon's.
Apparently this particular album is a re-release with one additional track (Alison's Uncle) which was left off the original release from what I read about it and you've definitely got a great album there Tigger!
I believe Mr. Beach is incorrect here and AMG agrees (understandable error--discogs get adjusted all the time): http://www.allmusic.com/album/somethin-e...0000247835 Whatever--none of this diminishes its importance.

Domnerus is a leading Swedish Jazzer, and I've no idea who Sjokvist is...
Domnerus plays Sax, whilst Sjokvist plays a Swedish Church organ. The Music consists of several excerpts from Ellington's Sacred Concerts, some Spirituals, & a Hymn or two, all played in a stately manner.
Lovely chill-out Jazz...

"Amen" to all that. I admit to getting spooked by talk of "Fourth World Music", minimalism and Kiranic singing. My fears allayed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXmj9QcosoU << a lovely version, played straight. The next 2 are advanced thoughts, feelings and expressions put into practice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liuj_d8_UYk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz40YrNBje4 But then anytime Ry Cooder gets involved, it's gonna be accessible on one level or another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zeaTh0f0E4
He has a few complete albums on YouTube. Here's his wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Hassell

My assesment is one word "SUBLIME"
Woody Herman stayed popular by staying relevant, by staying as experimental as when he started. A reading of his wiki is urged: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woody_herman From that I got this mention a career retro DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Woody-Herman-Flame...blue+flame << quoted only for the reviews

It would be easier to name the artists/groups Mr. Colaiuta hasn't played with...Excellent perspective from a master, shown at the head of his Website. Allan Holdsworth is equally skilled and equally amazing in the "How does he do that stuff?" realm.
