The most prominent example is the Doobie Brothers: floundering 'til Michael McDonald joined and took them in a new direction.
pre-Michael:

with McD:

Assuredly there are other groups--care to contribute?

What amazes me the most about these tracks is the accuracy of the drummer(s) - you can set your watch to this. And all before the days of drum machines. Perfect timing.

And on the subject of rescuing bands - David Gilmour rescued Pink Floyd. Big time. Without him they would have become another circus act.

There's a body of opinion saying that Brian Jones had to leave the Rolling Stones for them to progress--a more extreme version has him being deliberately killed so he couldn't come back or cause a fuss. Don't know about all that...

I don't like McDonald's voice ! I preferred the Doobies before he came along!

If you love the Doobies, this interview with Tiran Porter will be of interest:

The addition of Trevor Rabin certainly kick-started YES in the 80s.

I think the opposite...Jones played sitar and I think the Stones may have
progressed somewhat with a prog rock sound...
