What Are You Listening To?
Giving John Rowles a bit of time tonight Smile

As I also love Engelbert and Tom Jones, John Rowles has one of those era power voices.

If you have never heard of him, look for a you tube song " Cheryl Moana Marie "

BOBBY DARIN "that's all" cd, 1960

album stats: #7 US

single stats:
"mack the knife".........#1 US, #1 UK, #5 AU
"beyond the sea"........#6 US, #8 UK, #13 AU

this is Bobby Darin a million miles away from his stupid "splish, splash" debut a couple of years before this album...
this is Bobby Darin taking on Sinatra,Deano,Sammy Jnr at their Vegasy big band, cabaret type stuff...
in fact i read a bio once on Sammy Davis Jnr and he said in the book..."bobby darin is the only artist i refuse to follow on stage because i cant top him!", thats a big statement indeed!
the songs on here are all standard crooner songs and Bobby does them pretty well IMO, but Dean Martin is still the standard by which i rate crooners...
only one track i dont like but two i love(the two singles!), which incidently Bobby "owns" IMO

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: through a long and sleepless night
best track: mack the knife

tracks:

1. mack the knife ***

RICKY LEE-JONES "girl at her volcano" cd, 1983

album stats: #39 US, #51 UK, #39 AU

i bought this 5cd set some years ago because i was looking for her debut album because i liked those very early singles of hers...
they didnt have the album, but for only a couple of bucks more i could get five albums...so i did.
its a shame really, because i expected so much from Ricky, but have been let down...
this "girl at her volcano" album is a live set, but i dont like it(dont like many songs on it at all)...
i just find her to be boring, boring, boring with very little variation in the songs or her vocal quality, theres just nothing there
thus i dont like this album or the other four on the pack,it was a waste of time and a waste of money getting this!

i do not like this album

tracks:

1. lush in life *
2. walk away rene *
3. hey bub *
4. my funny valentine **
5. under the boardwalk *
6. rainbow sleeves **
7. so long *

Bobby - funny that most remember him as a pop artist yet he was more at home as a crooner

Rickie - love that debut album, after that, a sharp decline

Reply
Bobby only spent a year or two as a pop-idol, i prefer his crooner stuff better overall, even though this album's score doesnt reflect that, also, shame he died so young, he had so much more music to offer the world IMO

Ricky Lee...
i love about half that debut album, the rest(from memory) wasnt that good, but the 5cd set for a single disc price...cant really go too far wrong overall i guess
i agree on the 'sharp decline' comment you made also
