Newbie who likes the Doobies
#1
Yes, that's right. I'm a fan of the Southern Rock-cum-Blue Eyed Soul group as well as the other kind of doobies. But much much more than that:

Favorite genres:

Jazz
Early Rock & Roll
Early R&B/Doo Wop/Soul
British Invasion
Psychedelic era
Progressive Rock
Jazz-Rock/Fusion
Punk Rock/New Wave
'80s Pop
'80s College Rock
'90s - present Alt Rock

Favorite artists:

The Beatles
Bob Dylan
The Byrds
The Beach Boys
Chuck Berry
The Who
Arthur Lee & Love
The Velvet Underground
Bo Diddley
Jimi Hendrix
The Rolling Stones
The Doors
Cream
Led Zeppelin
CSNY
Neil Young
Traffic
Jethro Tull
Gentle Giant
Frank Zappa
Yes
Pink Floyd
Steely Dan
The Doobie Brothers
David Bowie
Roxy Music
Talking Heads
The Police
The Pretenders
Pixies
Jane's Addiction
Nirvana
Jenny Lewis / Rilo Kiley

And my late brother's band, The Verge & Mary

Currently gaining an appreciation for:

Son House
Johnny Cash
Neil Diamond
Neil Sedaka
Bobby Darrin
Ricky Nelson
Del Shannon
Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
Ike & Tina Turner and/or The Ikettes
Phil Ochs
The Monkees
Gram Parsons
Emmylou Harris
Tom Petty
Bee Gees
.38 Special
The Hooters
Stevie Nicks
Phil Collins
Death Cab For Cutie
The Shins
The Strokes
Weezer
Tegan & Sara
Coldplay
Scissor Sisters
The Killers

I joined this group because I need to be able to talk about and discuss the music I listen to. Duh, right? I also just recently lost my eldest brother who was in a band and shared the same passion for music that I have. In fact, he was the one who introduced me to so many of my favorite bands and genres. If it weren't for him I would never have started listening to Frank Zappa when I was 12; I wouldn't have the same appreciation for Folk and Country. If it weren't for him I might never have even heard of The Youngbloods or Ricky Nelson or Paul Revere & The Raiders or Freddy Fender.

My friends are all music fans like me but they don't have an incessant need to discuss, dissect, and analyze the way I do. So I'm hoping to get into some interesting discussions here about all different kinds of music. Cheers!

Hi Jaybird, & welcome to Music Discussion.

That's a comprehensive list of tastes & faves...

You, Sir, are a lover of Classic Rock, but your tastes extend beyond that, which is no bad thing.

Sorry to hear about your bro, I hope discussing music with us all here will help.

Thanks.

Yes, I do love classic rock but lately I've been doing a lot of what I like to call "genre surfing." I'll start with one artist in a given genre - Gene Vincent and Rockabilly, for instance. I'll then branch out to the Dorsey Brothers, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, etc. Then I'll start sampling artists from related styles and before you know it I'll end up listening to something anywhere from The Chantays to The Charlie Daniels Band to X.

This makes me probably one of iTunes' best customers...

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, my signature is German for "give unto me a bit of flooring under this fat floating sofa."

It's a Zappa thing...

Gidday mate,

Welcome to MD! There wouldn't too much of what you've listed that I don't like. Confusedmile:
As Iota said, the German grammar is a little sus' though!
If your brother introduces himself when I get there, I'll definitely say hello.

Just as a matter of interest, the first thing I ever heard from The Youngbloods was Get Together back in the seventies and I've loved them ever since.

A mate finally got me a copy of Jesse Colin Young - On the Road (1976) which has great 'live' versions of both Ridgetop and T-Bone Shuffle on it!

Well, then you'll have to take it up with the late Mr. Zappa. They're lyrics he wrote for the "Once Upon A Time" intro to the song, "Sofa #1" from the first volume of his You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore series.

Badly translated or not, it's just silly lyrics to an even sillier song that I find amusing. Take a listen if you like. Obviously, The Mothers of Invention (particularly Jim Pons) do the words more comedic justice than I ever could.

But that's my sig and I'm sticking with it.
