Reading another post written here, I didn't know that the 'The Clash' were punk.
I love the 'Londons Calling' song. What a classic.

They were one of the biggest names in punk rock ever. They did dabble in other styles, most notably reggae. That crossover is part of what helped them reach such a wide audience.

They were indeed a punk band, just not very good at it. Their first album was their "punk" effort and it was complete pap.
London Calling (as in the album) is excellent, mainly because they don't try to do punk anymore. Except in the song "London Calling" which is by far the worst song on the album and the only one I skip when listening to the album.

I have a lot of respect for the Clash; they made it believable that punk could branch out into other genres. I mean look at the use of reggae, funk, etc. throughout the London Calling album. People called Combat Rock their "sellout" album but it's a pretty weird way to sell out - yeah, "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah" were mainstream hits, but how the heck does anybody hear the artsy "Ghetto Defendant" or "Sean Flynn" and call it an attempt to reach the mainstream?
I'm babbling. Anyway, Clash is awesome. Only band that mattered.
"Mr. Grover 'n' Mr Gillian
You musta made a million
The night that Frank Zappa caught on fire
Could you tell us all about it
Keep it short and use my version
Or everyone out there'll think I'm a liar."

I didn't know about that, and only today saw this reply. Where and how did this happen? Is this another example of political correctness gone made?

The Clash was neither great nor terrible, just highly overrated, like a lot of bands.
"London Calling" is ok. "Rock the Casbah" sucked.
