SAMMY DAVIS JNR "the definitive collection"
ive been a long time Sammy fan but until recently never owned any of his material...
not sure if this is politically correct or not, but i dont care!, Sammy is a black bro who actually sounds like a white dude crooner, not dissimilar to fellow 'rat pack' guys Frankie and Deano...
pretty hard to criticise a man of his generousity, compassion his tireless work to help the 'needy' in society...
twenty track single disc set featuring his best tracks including "the candy man", "mr.bojangles", "ive gotta be me", "that ole black magic", "gonna build a mountain", "the people tree""too close for comfort" etc etc, the list simply goes on and on...
so, of twenty tracks, eight i love, eight i like, but four dont cut it for me(unfortunately), including the really stupid "love me or leave me" whereby Sammy mumbles out dumbass phrases that arent even words...like, 'zing-a-zinga,bop do bop" type rubbish for around three minutes...yeh sure i understand its a jazzy, bluesy, big band type of thing to do, but it aint for me...
that aside, this is a pretty classy effort from a pretty classy guy who i wish i'd have got the chance to see perform live, but sadly never will now!
pretty hard to pick a favourite track here, i'd like to pick the definitve version of "ive gotta be me" but "the candy man" brings back fond memories of my earliest childhood memories, so ,candy man it is!
