THE BEATLES "the beatles" aka "the white album" , vinyl,cd. 1968
pretty hard to add something new that hasnt already been said a million times about these guys or this album...
i did find one little fact i didnt know though, and that is the tune "goodnight" was actually written by john, i'd always thought that whimsical ditty had Paul's mark all over it!,
and we all know that this was the album that drove Manson's "family" to commit mass murder, and that Paul had to attend court to explain the meaning behind "helter skelter" as the Family had scrawled "healter skelter" on their crime scenes in the victim's blood...ok, enough of the gore...back to the album...
there are a few songs on this one that deal with either death, suicide or murder, its a very dark album lyrically, even Paul McCartney's usual happy-go-lucky songs are absent here(ob-la-di-ob-la-da,martha my dear probably the exceptions)....
"dear prudence" was actually written for Mia Farrow's little sister Prudence by john whilst seeking guidance from the Maharishi in India......
i think john Lennon's wordplay really hit new heights with this album, things like "cry baby cry","happiness is a warm gun" and "glass onion" are superb imagery songs.
even Gorge comes out with a classic to rival anything the other two ever wrote in "while my guitar gently weeps", which has Eric Clapton on lead guitar...
four absolute shocking Beatle tracks on here IMO, "wild honey pie","why dont we do it in the road","long long long" and that stupid nine minute collage of sounds called "revolution #9"....very avante-guard!, i guess though, other than that stupid #9 thing, the only realy criticism i have of this album would be, i'd have rather heard the more rockin' version of "revolution" on here(b-side of Hey Jude) instead f the melloed out version, just thought it would have sounded better...
look, i was always impressed with this album from the first time i heard it, and frankly, i stillget the same feel for it after all these decades down the road...a true classic album does that year in,year out, which makes this one "a true classic"!
seriously i cannot pick a favourite off this one, couldnt even pick five ahead of the rest, this is just a superb album..its chaotic and messy, yet sublimely coherrant all at the same time....much like The Beatles themselves!
