HOODOO GURU'S "mars needs guitars" cd, 1986
the Hoodoo's second album...
a bit more radio friendly than the debut set, as the songs are more commercially driven, not that thats a bad thing though...
four singles taken off this one out here...."bittersweet"(my favourite) made the top ten, "like wow-wipeout!" and "death defying" both made the top20 and "poison pen" made the top30, album reached the top10 here, got as high as 140 in the US, but on the US college charts this one peaked at #1...not surprisng really as these guys were always a big hit with University students for some reason...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
worst track: in the wild
best track: bittersweet

Not sure why I have this one. Must have picked it up from a review. Burnt again. I do like over
half the tracks, but the 5 I don't, I really don't. Leslie Feist is a Canadain artist who is
also a member of Broken Social Scene. Have only heard a little by them, and nothing by her.
This is her third solo album and got her a grammy nomination for Best New Artist (it was the
Amy Winehouse year) and she was the top winner in the Juno Awards the same year. I guess I'm in
the minority on this one. Reminded me of Amos, Apple, Bush, and even Laurie Anderson. Voice is
ok so I guess it's the songs for me. Hit #16 in the states and #2 in Canada. Four singles
released, of which 1234 was the only one to hit Billboards Hot 100, at #8.

Haven't heard The Reminder album. I have Metals by her. I'm not knocked out by her music ...interesting at times but then it becomes dull ! I like Broken Social Scene ...a precursor to ARCADE FIRE ! Music Head Wrote:Band Members for this release

STEREOPHONICS "keep calm and carry on" cd,2009
seventh album by these Welsh indi rockers(they have released eight albums in all plus a best of set)...
this is the only one i own though...
this one only reached #11 on the UK charts, five went to #1,the others all top10 hit albums...
IMO,this guys has one of the best modern rock voices around at the moment...powerful when needed, soft and delicate when required, but always great...
i hadnt heard of vocalist Kelly Jones until he recorded "mama told me not to come" with fellow Welshaman Tom Jones and heard him duet with Paul Weller around the same time...loved his vocals then and still do...
i really should get their best of set next as i like what ive heard of them since those duets!

DR. JOHN "best of the night tripper" cd, 2008
i first heard of Dr.John back in 1995 when Paul Weller covered "i walk on gilded splinters" on his "stanley road" album...took me years to be able to track down a best of set
to purchase as i really liked Weller's cover...
when i initially got this one i was thinking "this has got to be voodoo music", then when it came time to find out a bit about about the guy on wikki...i found out i was correct in that way out statement!, he comes from New Orleans,is fascinated by voodoo, all his music styles revolve around jazz and blues mainly with splashes of rock and R+B, along with another genre ive never heard of in "zydeco", which is apparently linked to the creole/french thing down in New Orleans
also discovered that the good doctor isnt so good afterall...he was a heroin addict by his teens, owned a whorehouse in New Orleans whilst still a teenager and run an abortion clinic at the same time...another illegal activity!
also found out he spent time in the Texas Pen for drugs and having shootouts with the police at times also....!
anyway, he started off as a session muso for Sonny And Cher and Canned Heat,he then started recording his own stuff and i guess the rest is history...released his latest album last year and it still going strong!
me, i still cant totally get into this guy or his music, i still find it too ecclectic to say the least...sometimes there are several genres in each track...very distracting IMO, and that voodoo stuff...well, i hope he hasnt got a Crazy Horse doll that he is sticking pins in right now as i dont love this album LOL!
allup though, the album is a messy mix of weird material, some kooky stuff, some very good bluesy/jazzy moments and some rock...who knows, i may love this album one day, but until then these thirty six tracks on this double set score a 1.8 from me...
from the album, my three love tracks!
