What Are You Listening To?
rocknrolla Wrote:Jake Bugg's debut album.

very good debut album by Bugg IMO....got it about six months ago when it was released here, has a distinct 1950s rockabilly/sun records feel to it without being pretentious or sounding fake or forced, the guy has a good opportunity to go places if he develops and matures as a writer and musician...
how old is he now...18???

MANFRED MANN "hit mann!:the essential singles-1963-1969" cd,2008

i love these guys immensely, up there with The Small Faces,Who,Spencer Davis Group,Kinks and obviously The Beatles IMO...
i own two vinyl best of sets by these guys, split up as volume I and volume II...the first contains the Paul Jones singles, the second the Mike D'Abo years, but this one encompasses ALL their UK hits, from as the title suggests,1963-1969....
they were in the charts over that period as much and as often as The Beatles were in the UK, infact i believe they were actually runners up the the Fab's for single sales in the 1960s...
this collection contains their debut single "hubble bubble, toil and trouble" which wasnt a huge hit, and is not included on my vinyl best of set...
these guys also recorded a few Bob Dylan tracks in the 1960s...probably more than The Byrds in fact if memory serves me correct...and had a worldwide #1 hit with their version of "the mighty quinn", also interesting to note is a song written by Dylan called "if you gotta go,go now"...cant ever recall ever hearing Dylan do this one himself, maybe he just wrote it and passed it on???
man oh man...its so hard for me to pick a best track here as they made so many great songs, but i'll have to go for the lovely haunting ballad "come tomorrow" this time round, which incidently is also my mum's favourite M+M song which probably means i heard it before i could walk!
a great compilation of their music, with all of their hits on bvoard, well worth the money in purchasing it!
with the links, i will be putting up a few of their lesser known hits instead of the ones everyone knows so you can hear something different along with my favourite one...

PROCOL HARUM "a salty dog" cd, 1969.

Procol's third album,
only have one other..."shine on brightly", i dont really like that one much, but this is a different kettle of fish...
more varied musically than the other one i have, some rock, pop, blues and orchestrated tracks also...
nothing i dislike whatsoever here, loving the opening two tracks...
was surprised to find that this one only reached #27 in the UK, and #32 in the US...didnt even chart here!?
only one single made the UK charts, the title track which clocked in at a miserable #42...
this is a very good album IMO,would have probably sounded better back in '69 as part of the era, but whatever, i like it anyway!

also, just curious whether Jerome has this one in his collection, well, do you? and what do you think of it as i would have thought this would be right up your alley mate?

yes there is quite a diversity on the procul albums which to me is one of their strong points

Looks like I finally made it to this years purchases in the new stack. Not a great start. It
passes but I was disappointed. This is the groups debut album, and I think even they must have
been surprised by it's success. On the strength of the Hold On single, the album reached #6 in
the US and #3 in the UK. Not bad for a debut. Three grammy nominations followed with no wins. I
did get one other love track out of the album, but three tracks just didn't make a like.
Surprised to see that Hold On single didn't really chart that well so maybe that's not what
drove the album sales. That song barely touched the chart here. Three follow up singles didn't
even do that. The follow up album will be highly anticipated by the music press but not by me.
And what a terrible album cover.

Golden Earring - Moontan. This album is quite unique in the way they blend electronica, rock n roll and ambient sounds. A masterpiece IMO.

BRENDA LEE "brenda lee" vinyl record, 1960

Brenda's second studio album...
still very rock and roll, none of that country music that she later recorded...
includes her debut single,"jambalaya",a cover fo the Hank Williams standard, and probably my favourite Brenda Lee track "let's dump the broomstick", which incidently, was not on the twenty-eight track best of set i posted a few days ago...
a very good album of pure 1950s rock and roll from one of the finest felame rock and roll singers of the era...
only posting my favourite track here as some of the other hits were already posted with the best of set a few days ago(country threads)
