What Are You Listening To?

I have no doubt that this guy is really trying to be innovative but to be quite honest I would rather listen to my vacuum cleaner. Don't like this at all.

But nature abhors it! Haha, I respect that, it's definitely not for everybody. It's more about technique and texture than anything, and it can sound like a group of whales at times. I was first exposed to it when I saw a video of it and it blew me away. Here it is:

And here's a video where he breaks down what he's doing in the piece, I think it's pretty interesting. You at least have to give him credit for bringing together jazz and ambience with some skill:

But yeah, it can be a bit lugubrious at times. I've an infatuation with bass and baritone saxophones and avant-garde jazz, so I'm sure that my bias is showing here a little bit.

Had a look at these clips. From a purely technical point of view it's quite interesting but I still don't like the end product - I could not listen to this for any length of time but thx for the info anyway. Now if he had to blend that with something more conventional I might be interested.

I know he's done a lot of work with artists like Feist and Tom Waits, but I don't know if he brings anything like this to the table or if he just plays as a session musician.

Colin Stetson - Those Who Didn't Run

I recently found this guy and have been digginghis work a lot. He does ambient jazz textures on bass sax. It's mostly a foray into multiphonics (getting multiple sounds out of an instrument that generally plays one note at a time) and a display of Stetson's circular breathing. The intensity that he goes into with only one instrument is amazing, it sounds like a group of wales swimming in an avant-garde jazz ocean. Stetson wears a dog collar with a microphone in it to pick up on his vocals when he sings and plays at the same time. This album consists of two ten minute tracks and both are very similar but still retain an amazing quality about them. Stetson is becoming one of my favourite innovators in jazz.

Bob Goulet was a very popular singer in Canada ! primarily in the sixties and seventies to some extent. He was Lancelot in the popular musical Camelot. His second wife was Carol Lawrence the sidekick of Carol Burnett.

The Canuck gals loved him but he wasn't a bad singer ...a very good voice ...and he did quite well for himself for the time when it was difficult for Canadians to crack the US market ! He actually had dual citizenship having being born in Massachusetts and moving to Alberta, Canada when he was 13. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 74.

GIL SCOTT-HERON/BRIAN JACKSON "winter in america" cd,1974

posted this one a while ago in the "what did you buy" section...got it on the back of his final album's love score "im new here".
i only previously knew one track off this one, "the bottle", i searched out this, the original a decade ago after Paul Weller covered it on his covers album "studio150"...i love Weller's rock laden version more than this one, but its still pretty good...track highlights the problems in ghetto's due to alcohol abuse...great lyrics, would have fitted well on Stevie's "innervisions" set or Marvin's "whats goin' on" set...
the whole album is full of socio-political statements like those previously mentioned albums also...
apparently this is Heron's fourth album, Brian jackson is a flautist...
lots of jazz,funk and soul happening here...a good fusion of sounds IMO, but this one does not come out as good in the rating as "im new here", still, it is one of those "must listen to" albums.
best track here is the amusing yet serious "H20-gate blues", yep its about Watergate and related US Govt related issues around 73-74...love that track!
this is one of those albums that need to be played in its entirety for cohesion and full effect(PF's the Wall is the classic example of this)

Weekly new stack pull. After some posting and praise by a couple of our members of some Mingus,
I realized I didn't have anything. Had to remedy that. I was familiar with the man and had no
doubt heard some, but had never really listened. Usually go for a compilation when I need to
pick up on an old artist, but went for this highly praised studio release from before my day.
Like most jazz recordings that I post, I will not grade these tracks as I would other types of
music. I love jazz for what it was and think that anyone into music as much as most of us are,
shoud appreciate it's place in history. The transition of music from big band to smaller jazz
ensembles was a natural progression that should not be left out of the equation. Listen to it
for what it is, and dont compare it. It is a breed of it's own.
