What Are You Listening To?
Why apologise for listening to possibly the most "complete" band in history !!!!!...they pretty much did it all....innovative and mainstream together ! I don't know how many people I have talked to over the years saying that they wish they had seen Pink Floyd !!!!

Weekly jump into the cd stack. Still in the Dylan collection with his 22nd album here. Bob was ready to
move on after his christian run of three albums. The public was ready prompting a resurgence in sales. His
first gold album after failing with the last two. Mark Knopler was on board for this one, and his guitar
presence is all over it. Also co-produced with Dylan, after Bowie, Zappa and Costello were considered.
Mick Taylor, Alan Clarke, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare also play on the album. Loking back, I think
that's what kept Bob interesting was his constant switching of musicians on his albums. The sessions for
the album yielded many tracks that didn't appear, other than in a bootleg version. Although there was no
tour for the album, Bob did make a rare appearance on national tv, on David Letterman's recently launched
late night show. There are clips from that which I chose not to post, as once again Bob changed the songs
so radically, they were nowhere close to the recorded version. They album scored at #20 here, #6 in
Australia, and #9 in the UK.

back to Dylan's "infidels" album....

like Jerome said....his best album by far, absolute perfection IMO...

i dont think he ever wrote anything better than "man of peace", "union sundown", "licence to kill" and "jokerman", his four greatest tracks and all on one album...

i also agree with MH that "i and i" is the least likeable track on here, but its still pretty good

as a footnote, i bought my first cd player in 1987, my first three puchases on that day were this one by Dylan, "sgt peppers" and Dire Straits "making movies", i still have them and they are still in pristine condition even though they have been played at least 100 times since then!

Didn't care much for these guys when they were popular. I was in my anti arena rock phase. Times change
and so have I. They were a good band. In fact a best of would be appropriate I think. This is the groups
ninth album and comes out rather well. It became the biggest selling rock album of the year yielding their
first #1 single of Keep On Loving You and a #5 with Take It On The Run. Their were six songs from here
that hit the chart. The album also made the top here and #6 in the UK, becoming the groups best selling
going 9X platinum. They are still kicking I think, with an album in 2007.

You forgot 'A Sweetheart Like You' - classic stuff. It was used in the movie 'North Country' - right at the closing credits. It just fits that closing scene perfectly.

lyrics don't get any better

Well the pressure's down, the boss ain't here
He gone North, for a while
They say that vanity got the best of him
But he sure left here in style
By the way, that's a cute hat
And that smile's so hard to resist
But what's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

You know, I once knew a woman who looked like you
She wanted a whole man, not just a half
She used to call me sweet daddy when I was only a child
You kind of remind me of her when you laugh
In order to deal in this game, got to make the queen disappear
It's done with a flick of the wrist
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

You know, a woman like you should be at home
That's where you belong
Taking care for somebody nice
Who don't know how to do you wrong
Just how much abuse will you be able to take ?
Well, there's no way to tell by that first kiss
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

You know you can make a name for yourself
You can hear them tires squeal
You can be known as the most beautiful woman
Who ever crawled across cut glass to make a deal.

You know, news of you has come down the line
Even before ya came in the door
They say in your father's house, there's many mansions
Each one of them got a fireproof floor
Snap out of it baby, people are jealous of you
They smile to your face, but behind your back they hiss
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

Got to be an important person to be in here, honey
Got to have done some evil deed
Got to have your own harem when you come in the door
Got to play your harp until your lips bleed.
They say that patriotism is the last refuge
To which a scoundrel clings
Steal a little and they throw you in jail
Steal a lot and they make you king
There's only one step down from here, baby
It's called the land of permanent bliss
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?
