Hypnotic Brass Ensemble-self-titled

With a name like that, I was ex[ecting this to be drone or free improv or something like that, but this is some damn funky stuff

Hard for Frank to get a dislike from me. Maybe if he's covering some pop standard from his later years. Not sure
when most of these tunes here were done originally. The only one that I knew before Frank is Hello Dolly which is
my least favorite, but still a nice job. Nothing could match Louis's. These songs were pulled from various
recording sessions over a four year period, with a lot of different backing musicians, so I'm not sure if it
qualifies as a legitimate studio album. It does include one of his signature songs and my favorite of Luck Be A
Lady. How many signature songs does Frank have? When he did something, he made it his. A low charter by Frank's
standards only reaching #30, but considering the british invasion and rock was in full force by this point, still
respectable. The album never even reached gold status. Shows no singles charting.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Hello Dolly

Best Track - Luck Be A Lady

They call you lady luck
But there is room for doubt
At times you have a very un-lady-like way
Of running out

Your on this date with me
The pickin's have been lush
And yet before the evening is over
You might give me the brush

You might forget your manners
You might refuse to stay
And so the best that I can do is pray

Luck be a lady tonight
Luck be a lady tonight
Luck if you've ever been a lady to begin with
Luck be a lady tonight

Luck let a gentleman see
Just how nice a dame you can be
I know the way you've treated other guys you've been with
Luck be a lady with me

A lady dosen't leave her escort
It isn't fair, it isn't nice
A lady doesn't wander all over the room
And blow on some other guys dice

Luck let a gentleman see
Just how nice a dame you can be
I know the way you've treated other guys you've been with
Luck be a lady with me

A lady dosen't leave her escort
It isn't fair, and it's not nice
A lady doesn't wander all over the room
And blow on some other guys dice

Lets keep this party polite
Never get out of my sight
Stick with me baby, I'm the guy that you came in with
Luck be a lady tonight

so, Lets keep this party polite
Never get out of my sight
Stick with me baby, I'm the guy that you came in with
Luck be a lady tonight

luck be a lady...
luck be a lady...
luck be a lady...tonight

JOHN COLTRANE "a love supreme"

got this one the week MH reviewed it here a while ago...
heard other members praise this one also...
heard it a couple of times now and im afraid im not on the same wavelength as the rest of you guys...
its ok IMO, nothing special....sounds a bit monotonous at times for me,too much of a muchness, and four instrumentals that last a combined time of 32-33 minutes just does not cut it for me!
Dani is a fan of the saxaphone and she definately does not like it by any means.
there bits in the tracks that i do like and bits i dont like, much like Tubular Bells, so its a bit hard scoring individual tracks this time round....

overall, not bad.

not really surprised there
thought you might have a tough time with that one
for me, loving old jazz was a gradual process after a rock upbringing
once it kicked in, I was on board

same here, I never truly appreciated jazz until "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady"

anyways, right now I'm listening to Django Reihardt, king of Gypsy jazz. The more I explore guitarists outside of the rock canon (John Fahey, Derrick Bailey, Sonny Sharok, this guy), the less I care about Page or Clapton

Pulled together from three different recording sessions when Miles was doing some moonlighting while working with
Charlie Parker. Likewise with Gil Evans who was a member of Claude Thornhills band (not familiar with him). The
only other member present for all sessions was Gerry Mulligan. All sessions have nine musicians thus becoming known
as the Miles Davis Nonet. Never knew rthere was a term for a nine person group. Recorded in 1949-50 but not
released until 1957, after Miles had become a bit more known. Some very nice short tunes, none over four minutes.
The only thing that doesn't work is the one with vocals. Now that's a switch. Closing track, Darn That Dream, Kenny
Hagood, terrible voice. I see he was the vocalist for Dizzy Gillespie's band. Must have had an off day here. Other
than that, love seven of the twelve tracks. I remember seeing a Miles Davis one on one where the interviewer kept
trying to get him to classify his style of music. All he would answer was "we just call it music, man". Tell 'em
Miles.

BB King was quoted as saying ....The blues is high school but jazz is university in reference to guitar playing.

Yep, Frith is great, can't say the same for his politics

Arto Lindsay is another guitarist like that, a punk rock Fred Frith, if you will
