What Are You Listening To?

Van's umpteenth album, released in 2005.

Not really a Blues or Jazz album, but there are some good Blues & Jazz tracks, so this is a best fit.

Sumptuously recorded set of songs with Van's usual musical attention to detail. He plays some solid Sax & Harmonica, and his vocals show no signs of deterioration.

Fine album, if not significantly different to many of his more recent efforts.

RoviMusic 4/5 stars.

Now this is some solid blues. He's definitely got some major guitar chops, and his voice is certialy fit to sing the blues, but what really makes this work is the soul influence. It gives the music an extra touch of life I feel is missing in some older blues

Sammy Davis JR California suite a really great jazz suite featuring california suite on side one and a collection of songs on side two notably a stranger called the blues recorded in the early sixties i think songs writen by Mel Torme and sung beautifully by Sammy Davis JR i think the band was mainly made up from the Marty Paich dektete. this is a class record.

Another gift from a mate. A different mate. The one that disappeared. Guess he had a dup of this and offered it up.
I accepted. Did not have anything on cd for Billie so this was a welcome addition. Very good compilation covering
recordings from '46-'59. A two disc set of 35 tracks. Guest lineup of Kenny Burrell, Oscar Peterson, Beny Carter
and Coleman Hawkins, all appearing on various tracks. How can you go wrong? The critics said Billie had passed her
prime by this point. I disagree. That voice just matured with age. A few of the early live ones I don't care for on
here, and I thought by the time I got to disc two, I would be burnt out, but it didn't happen. It just got better.
Stars Fell On Alabama is an easy favorite with her classic God Bless The Child close behind. The full orchestra on
All The Way is the only one of that nature and quite different from the normal jazz backing. I think I still prefer
Etta and Ella with this style of music, but a little Billie should settle well with anyone.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - I Cover The Waterfront

Best Track - Stars Fell On Alabama

We lived our little drama
We kissed in a field of white
And stars fell on Alabama last night
I can't forget the glamour
Your eyes held a tender light
And stars fell on Alabama last night

I never planned in my imagination
A situation so heavenly
A fairy land where no one else could enter
And in the center just you and me
My heart beat like a hammer
My arms wound around you tight
And stars fell on Alabama last night

First released in 1959, mine is a '97 reissue. Liner notes say side 1 of the album was recorded at the wrong speed,
thus the need to correct the problem. If you say so label heads. Not that I don't believe that, but wouldn't you
think that maybe someone like Miles Davis would have noticed something like that when it was released. I'm just
sayin. The other difference from the original is the addition of an alternate take of Flamenco Sketches. I would
have to play them side by side to know the difference, but I guess the Miles heads would know. I do know they're
different because the second one is 6 seconds longer. I knew there was something missing from that first one. Now
that those gripes are out of the way, this is a superb album. Only one track of the five I don't love. Won't count
that alternate take. The cast includes Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans and John Coltrane. Although disputed, this
has been listed as the best selling jazz album of all time. Chosen by the Library Of Congress to be included in the
National Recording Registry and listed as #12 in Rolling Stones Greatest Albums Of All Time. A must have in any
jazz collection.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM
