What Are You Listening To?
Tiggi Wrote:Throwing Muses - Hunkpapa

This was my first window into the weird & wonderful world of Kristen Hersh. She's prolly my girly musical heroine.

This album is a sort of Pixies' gentler cousin, with more girlies.

BTW, Allmusic classify this as Pop/Rock, which is obviously bollocks.

Pop/Rock... I dunno. AlternaPop maybe.

I just had to comment because I haven't heard a mention of Throwing Muses for a long while. Kristen Hersh is awesome, and this is also the band that introduced me to Tanya Donelly. Good stuff all around.

Excellent !!

Are you a fan of Kristen's solo albums as well ?? Although the solo stuff is generally gentler still, and largely acoustic, there're still those dark lyrics to contend with.

The girl's a star of the first order !!

You Are Love - The Soundscapes

Giant Sand - Provisions

Howe Gelb's superlative non-voice comes across like he might be the bastard lovechild of Tom Waits, Lou Reed, and Leonard Cohen (Biology obviously not a strong point for me ). The music is spare, moody, and rootsy, and I like it...

Sadly, Hips and Makers is the only one of her solo albums that I've ever really listened to completely. Any recommendations? I've heard that she released an album featuring nothing but covers of Appalachian folks songs. That interests me tremendously!

Uhm... keeping on topic... today's listening... er...

The one you've heard of is Murder, Misery and Then Goodnight, and it's as you say. Still sounds very much Kristen Hersh.

I think the pick of the other solo albums is last year's Learn to Sing Like a Star, which sits comfortably between Hips & Makers & the Muses albums.

Also back on topic (Should have included this in last post !!):

Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle

More, even sparer, Americana. Bewitching stuff...
