What Are You Reading ?

Senator from Arizona for 30+ years. Retired in 1986. Came in with Eisenhower. Ran for president against LBJ in 1964 and lost by a landslide carrying only 7 states. Only a years after Kennedy was killed, so Johnson was still somewhat popular. Vietnam was yet to heat up, so I think it was a non-issue. I had just started having an interest in politics, though not yet eligible to vote. Was vaguely aware of Kennedy/Nixon. Barry had a campaign slogan for the election, "In Your Heart, You Know He's Right". Dem's countered with "In Your Guts, You Know He's Nuts". Seemed like a pretty straight forward guy to me. Told it like it was, even then. Surprised he stayed in office as long as he did. Pulls no punches in the book, Nixon, and even Reagan over Iran/Contra. Easy to do after you're out of office. Give 'em hell Barry.

Grade - A

next up - Main Street by Sinclair Lewis

i'll give our John Howard credit where its due...he always spoke his mind to the Australian people and told us what he wanted to do and/or impliment etc....thats why he got four terms as Prime Minister...everyone knew where they stood with him, and that ALL election promises would be kept...
even though he was "conservative", he would still negotiate with Trade Unions etc if it meant an improvement for Australia and Australians....

cant knock anyone who puts country needs ahead of politics!

'11-22-63,' by Stephen King.

I have not read Mr. King since the nineties, but a member of another forum recommended this novel to me, and I went out and purchased it at Barnes and Noble. I am over halfway through it, and I must say, this is easily one of his top ten works.

As you can most likely tell by the title, it refers to the assassination date of John F. Kennedy.

The premise is about an English teacher, who through a dying friend, learns of a portal that takes one back in time to the exact date---August of 1958. When the individual goes back through the portal, he arrives two minutes ahead of the time he originally entered it. Each time he enters it, the changes he made regarding history are wiped clean.

This is a terrific and powerful novel. I read online where Stephen King stated he originally got the idea back in the seventies, but held off on writing it due to not being at the talent level he desired and the amount of research it would take to accomplish successfully.

If you are a fan of Stephen King or history, I highly recommend this novel. It just came out a few months ago. This is different than many of King's prior works, and is a refreshing change of pace. It is addicting and draws you in instantly and does not let go.

^^^ That sounds really interesting. I think you've sold me on it. I have a pile of books to read but maybe I can throw that one on the pile too.

I just finished reading the Steve Jobs biography. I recommend the book for anyone interested in technology.

UK comedian and investigative journalist gets his teeth into the hypocrisy surrounding the arms industry operating within the "Ethical Foreign Policy" of Tony Blair's government.

Thomas does a similar thing to Michael Moore, but I'd suggest he has a far higher level of integrity. His stock-in-trade is uncovering the truth, then asking the embarrassing questions of officialdom that arise.

That wouldn't take much.

Autobiog from Jewish Cockney self-made millionaire businessman (purveyor of bargain basement consumer electronics), former chairman of Tottenham Hotspur soccer club, UK equivalent to Donald Trump on our version of The Apprentice reality TV program, & now member of The House of Lords.

Love him or loathe him, he's a colourful character.

I'd never noticed before. You're absolutely right !!

Sugar's trademark style is a brutal honesty that must make him almost a polar opposite to Nixon.

Beauty is only skin deep, it seems...
