What Are You Listening To?
I have now set my sights on "Live at the Village Vanguard" by John Coltrane. Just brilliant, I can't recommend this masterpiece enough. Easily up there with his strongest works like "Ascension" or "A Love Supreme. Well, maybe not "A Love Supreme", almost no album is that good.

Here I am again. Giving "John Coltrane and Johhny Hartman" a listen. Beautiful sax combines with beautiful vocals to make a beautiful album

I like the Tijuana Brass stuff but not so much for this. Gone is that flavor for more of a soft jazz feel. One vocal track of the eight, I Got It From You, which is bad. I did like Herbs vocal from This Guys In Love With You some years earlier, but this one is just bad. Only could like three of these tracks, which were the closest to a jazz arrangement. One disco leaning, Manhattan Melody, which takes the worst. It was that era. And of course when you own your own label, you can put out whatever you want. Surprised this even charted on the pop side (#61) but the #10 jazz seems more in line. Magic Man was a #79 single.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Manhattan Melody

Try Urszula Dudziak albums for Polish jazz ! She may even be on the Komeda album ? She has a very evocative voice !
mtthwibrahim Wrote:Now I'm on Krzysztof Komeda "Astigmatic", a very interesting little piece of Polish third stream. Perhaps the best jazz album made outside America. It reminds me a little bit of "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady", so I guess that makes it an automatic masterpiece

Alice has a very massive discography on her own ! Very underrated artist IMO. John and Alice's son Ravi is an accomplished jazz tenor saxophonist in his own right and appeared on his mother's 2004 album - Translinear Light. Unfortunately Alice Coltrane passed away in 2007 so now Ravi is continuing the Coltrane Legacy !
mtthwibrahim Wrote:I've been on sort of a jazz kick lately, so expect to see me here

Right now, I'm enjoying "Journey in Satchindananda" by Alice Coltrane, Coltrane's widow. Very interesting and spiritual avant jazz with some gorgeous hap arrangements. Her and 'Trane must have been a great couple

Jarring, exciting, and just all around chaotic. Easily one of my all time jazz favorites

Under my umber-Ella-Ella-Ella. Sorry, it just slipped out. I hate that song. Anyway, Ella, so many compilations out
there, and this one is rather weak for me. How can you have an 11 track best of set for Ella Fitzgerald. Barely
scratches the surface. Better than nothing of course. Not sure of the release date on this, but don't think it's
very old. See See Rider was annoying. I'm used to the Animals. People is actually better than "the bitches"
version. Problem with me for albums with material this old, is I never know if they are originals. Not that that
should take away from the quality. A few of those scat type things which I don't care for. It is Ella, and you
can't take away from that. She is a legend.
