What Are You Listening To?
Ask any musician about their opinion of the Beatles, Matt ! You'd be surprised at the answer !!!!!

Part 3 in a 4-part string of brilliant albums released by this band. It's certainly nowhere near the follow-up in terms of quality, but it's still really really good. Man, what a great band. Whenever someone says the Beatles are the greatest band ever, it makes me sad because I think about all these amazing bands who have made so much better and more creative music taking seond seat to pop band in the minds of most people

all you have to do is find out who influenced the artists you like and the answer in almost always....The Beatles

and if the artists you like werent directly influenced by the Beatles, then those bands that influenced the bands you like were almost certainly influenced by....The Beatles.

the beatles released something like 13 albums in 7 years, written and recorded some 200 original tracks over that period also....and most of them were good to brilliant....how many other artists can claim a track record like that.

their songs have been recorded by 1000's of artists over the last 5 decades....how many other writers can say they have achieved that? NONE!

all-in-all The Beatles are/were the greatest band in musical history......

Well said, Crazy !!!! I couldn't have agreed with you more !

As far as The Beatles are concerned with respect to "pop" music the POP means POPular with the majority of music listeners !!!!!

thanks SteveO....i am no means as big a Beatle fan as others on this site but the quality of their material, originality of it, their legacy and their record sales and stats all say that what they have achieved....the facts are irrefutable....

and the quality of Paul's,John's and George's solo output also confirm their status as "the best band ever"!

I seriously doubt Charles Mingus, Can, the Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, Sonic Youth, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Frank Zappa, Tim Buckley, Pete Brotzman, Natural Snow Buildings, King Crimson, Magma, the Replacements, Pavemant, the Mars Volta, or any other of my my favorite artists have borrowed from the Beatles. I mean, what huge innovation did the Beatles make, they were just doing what was popular and adding some indulgent tripe to trick people

Go back and check out the history of music ...there were pioneers of music long before Mars Volta(I like the band), etc... I think you are dwelling on the Beatles' as POP ...they are still POPULAR.....what you are saying is the same as saying that the Model T Ford sucks compared to a modern 2011 car....lol !!!!

Listen to some Beatle albums as well as the Sir Douglas Quintet around that era...they wrote very good songs....sit down. pick up a guitar and play and sing these songs! Remember when the Beatles arrived...1964 in Canada and the US...their music was spectacular for the TIME !!!! They also composed avant garde Revolution 9, heavy hard rock - Helter Skelter , Revolution, folk rock - I'm Looking Through You, We Can Work It Out. psychedelic - Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, I am the Walrus ...man oh man !!!! Let's get serious here !!!!

Even Mars Volta, Nick Cave,etc... tunes have to be stripped down at first on piano or guitar in an unplugged version ..think about it !I think these songs sound a little "popish" also before they are embellished on a recording !!!

There was nothing popular ,,the Beatles were IT...nothing to compare them to !!!! I cried when I saw Macca live two years ago...I can relate to the music..you can't I guess,,,you are too young my friend !

THE INNOVATION was to encourage kids to play music and write their own ORIGINAL material not to "borrow" from the Beatles !!!!!

ps - OFF TOPIC - (Dead Can Dance's album Within the Realm of a Dying Sun is very good !!!)
