What Are You Listening To?
"A Love Supreme" is truly an amazing record, although who needs it when "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" exists. Come to think of it, who needs anything else when "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" exists

Anyways, I listened to "Spiritual Unity" by Albert Ayler. A well-known classic I foolishly held back on for a while. Very powerful free jazz

Nice piece, Music Head !!!! I have an incredible 4 CD live set - Live in Japan and Coltrane does one whole side of My Favorite Things...one of his standards ! The improvisation on this is nothing but pure genius that just keeps changing and evolving in over twenty minutes !!!!

Time for one of my rare jazz masterpieces. Yes I love jazz. Just don't have that much. Hey, you can't buy everything. Not so much a fan of the new age/modern jazz, but the traditional variety can just mellow me out. It and classical are my exceptions to the dislike of instrumental music. It doesn't need words. This was recorded in 1964 with McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), Elvin Jones (drums) and of course, John on sax. Recognized by most as his greatest album, A Love Supreme's spiritual inspiration were John's dedication to God. Divided into four parts, this is meant to be one piece of work, so I cannot say there is a best track. It's all superb. Love finding these old live clips of the masters of the genre. By jazz standards the album sold quite well and is recognized as one of the greatest of all time. John Coltrane passed away in 1967, from liver cancer at the young age of 40.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

If it's true that a life of trial and tribulation provide a well of emotion to draw on musically, then there can be few with a well as deep as Billie's.

Sent to a Catholic boarding school at nine, where she's reputed to have been molested, raped at 12, prostitute at 16, a life of alcohol & drug addiction, a liking for violent men who all ripped her off, dead by the age of 44 from addiction-fuelled organ failure, and vitually penniless with one bank account containing 70 cents, and 750 dollars in cash. Some life...

On the flip side, she delivered some dazzling vocal performances throughout her all too brief career.

This 10-disc box set compiles all the master takes from her first 11 years of recording, with a couple of discs given over to alternate takes.

Billie was a heartbreaking singer in her latter years, and some of that is evident here, but you also get some joyous songs along with a healthy portion of what the booklet describes as her liking for masochistic love songs.

An incredibly emotional singer, with an ability to sound completely world-weary, despite all the songs here being recorded before she hit thirty.

Record companies come in for a lot of stick these days, but this set contains 230 lovingly remastered tracks for the princely sum of £15 from Amazon. That's public service record production IMV. Should be mandatory listening !!

Quite brilliant...

Thanks SteveO, and thanks for the info...

This set has rekindled my love affair with Lady Day, and although I already have a lot of her stuff, I've ordered further sets to nearly complete my collection of her studio releases.

Lavishly packaged 3-disc comp of Lady Day's mid-period releases from 1939 to 1950.

Most of the set runs from 1944, but Columbia wouldn't release Strange Fruit, so Commodore released it whilst she was still under contract Columbia.

These sides sound less hissy than the Columbia set, and the music is very strong. Fans argue endlessly over which era of Billie's recordings are the best, and I used to be firmly in the camp of the later Verve releases, but I think now that her classic material is mostly on this set, so I'm shifting...

Billie is marvellous.
