What Are You Listening To?

On the laptop.

Jazz Pianist/Vocalist/Humourist Fats Waller was mentioned on here a few weeks ago, and it felt appropriate to see what I've been missing.

This is basically a good single-disc career retrospective released in 2000, which features most aspects of his multi-faceted talent. Sublime keyboard skills (he features on both piano & organ), a voice not unlike Louis Armstrong, and some brilliant tunes make for a great disc.

Definite Buy Lister, but I have my eye on a 2-disc set which I couldn't listen to on We7.

AllMusic 4/5 stars.

Not listening to it right now, but last night I listened to "Oh Yeah" by Charles Mingus for the first time. My fourth Mingus album and, barring the obvious transcedent masterpiece that is the "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" aka greatest album ever made, his best

More memorable hard bop from the Trane himself

I bought this album on CD in 1987 and it was well worth it !!!! Matt's continuous praise of this Masterpiece prompted me to listen to it again. A wonderful recording of improvisational brilliance in four orchestral movements.
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

^ Yup, Matthew's championing of this album has landed it on my radar now.

On the laptop.

His eleventh album, released in 2010.

Picked up on this from a magazine review. It's an album of decent Blues music, but didn't strike me as strong enough to warrant a Buy List place.

Not a bad album, but there's so much quality vintage Blues out there that I don't feel it's good enough to deserve a purchase.

i-Pod listening in the garden yesterday PM.

Compilation of her music from a couple of spells with Capitol Records.

I'd characterise this as a Jazz album, but there's much besides. Peggy's not someone I'd explore in any more depth, but a good quality compilation is well worth having in my view.

Great voice, and a very good album.

From Wikipedia:
Naturally
Studio album by J.J. Cale
Released 1972
Recorded September 29, 1970–June 9, 1971 at Bradley's Barn, Mt. Juliet, Tennessee and Moss Rose Studio, Nashville, Tennessee
Genre Blues
Length 31:41
Naturally is the debut album by J.J. Cale. First released in 1972, it includes his song "After Midnight" which was first recorded by Eric Clapton in 1970.
Cale, who was languishing in obscurity at the time, had no knowledge of Clapton's recording of "After Midnight" until it became a radio hit in 1970. Cale's friend and producer, Audie Ashworth, encouraged Cale to record a full album in order to capitalize on the success of his song. Naturally was recorded independently, "on spec", the musicians being paid demo fees. Some songs, such as "Call Me the Breeze", were recorded with primitive drum machine accompaniment and sound almost like demos.
The album showcased Cale's distinctive, understated style, and it successfully established his solo recording career which continues to the present day. The album was originally released on Leon Russell's "Shelter" label, spawning the 1972 hits "Crazy Mama" (Billboard Hot 100 #22- his only Top 40 hit ) and "After Midnight" (#42) as well as turntable hits "Bringing it Back" (recorded by Kansas in their first album), "Call Me the Breeze" (later recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd) and "Clyde" (later recorded by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, and a 1980 country hit for Waylon Jennings).

He was a merry old soul. Yes, the King was stolen from the nursery rhyme. Leaving us much too soon in 1965 at the age of 46, from cancer. What a beautiful velvety voice. Used to get him and Johnny Mathis mixed up. Both the same in my book. This covers the Capitol hits from the 40's to the 60's. Signed by them in 1943 after which they became players in the industry. Their well known building in L.A. became known as the house that Nat built. He was that big. Out of 22 tracks here, 14 get a top rating for me, with Ramblin' Rose the best on this spin. With that many, the choice could be different tomorrow. With over 100 charting singles in his day, this set barely scratches the surface. Beginnings as a jazz pianist, it was soon discovered that Nat had a voice. First hit was Straighten Up And Fly Right in 1943. His first #1 was For Sentimental Reasons in 1946. Expanded his popularity in 1956 with the debut of his own NBC tv show. The show lasted for one season due to a lack of sponsors. Racism had reared it's ugly head. Recordings were one thing, a tv show starring a black personality was still tabboo. His name resurfaced in 1992 when daughter Natalie re-recorded his 1952 hit Unforgettable as a duet with daddys vocals included. That led to a Record Of The Year grammy and this excellent compilation.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - If I May

Best Track - Ramblin' Rose

Ramblin' rose, ramblin' rose
Why you ramble, no one knows
Wild and wind-blown, that's how you've grown
Who can cling to a ramblin' rose?

Ramble on, ramble on
When your ramblin' days are gone
Who will love you with a love true
When your ramblin' days are GONE

Ramblin' rose, ramblin' rose
Why I want you, heaven knows
Though I love you with a love true
Who can cling to a ramblin' rose?

One more time, everybody, now

Ramblin' rose, ramblin' rose
Why I want you, heaven knows
Though I love you with a love true
Who can cling to a ramblin' rose?
