The Sword... metal or rock and roll??
#1
i've been a fan of the sword since their first album, as most of my friends have. heres the question...

my friends that listen primarily to metal say they are "just hard rock and roll".

but my friends (and myself) that have slightly more well rounded tastes in music (listen to hip hop, metal, alternative, rock, whatever) all agree that its metal.

even though they do have a very classic rock feel to them, i honestly couldn't ever imagine hearing them on an actual "rock" radio station (not in my city anyways). and does the fact they are opening for metallica have any influence on this discussion?

its a really stupid argument but... thats what the internet is for right?

It is debatable. I think if we had any true metalheads on here they'd say nay. But for my money I say yes, but with some qualification. I group them with bands like Witchcraft and Wolf Mother - they sound like 70's heavy metal. Back then there was a fine line between hard rock and metal.

By the way, opening for Metallica does not make them metal. Most metalheads dismissed Metallica after the Black album. They haven't been metal since the 80's.

A better question would be... Does it really matter?

1 album can change a whole bands genre from metal to hard rock? you got to remember the classics like and justice for all, or, master of puppets i dont think a non heavy metal album or 2 outa many albums switches them over just like that. although i gota say death magnetic did give me my doubts on them. the only one i did like on that album was all nightmare long

But you do know that …And Justice for All was their fourth album and Death Magnetic is their ninth album. And you do know that everything that came after AJFA was plain shit. And you also know that five is greater than four and does by no means equal one or two. Don't you?

Of course it doesn't matter. I mean music doesn't matter, depending on the person. But it can be interesting to discuss. I find definitions interesting. I find boundaries, horizons, and the crossing of borders interesting.

I think what the OP may be really asking is when does metal separate itself apart from hard rock? Can a band/artist go back and forth?

Yes, a band can change it's sound with one album. They did. Why not?

Pardon? Music should always matter. To all. It is one of VERY few things that has the ability to bring so many people together for the love of one thing. Just saying.

Maybe I didn't phrase that clearly. I meant even music itself doesn't matter to some people. So sure, questioning if Sword is metal or not doesn't matter. It is still fun (to me at least) to discuss.

You did. Ms. rocknrollchick just complained about a statement that was totally taken out of context.

So, do you hold everthing dear that has the ability to bring so many people together for the love of one thing? Am I doomed because religion (yes, that's another one of those VERY few things) doesn't matter to me at all? Does it matter to you? Does politics matter to you? Or does sports?

Oh, by the way, I've found another thing that can bring people together. Eco friendliness etc. There are many greenies out there. Does it matter to you? Are you a vegan? Do you wear sandals and hemp clothing? You should, because there are so many people that do so and you could unite with them and feel connected with them and whatnot.

Please spare me with your oh so clever statements.
