Hi all
In this thread the bands you consider to be legends in the industry should be named. weather it is for the music, their vocals, lyrics or the life style they live.
That, of course, would be too easy, so feel free to bash the bands you donât like, stating why you donât like them (in detail) and why they should not be in this thread
I think hendrix should be in here. He is legenderly excellent with the guitar, Voodoo Child is a fantastic song, lryrics AND the skill on the guiatar
Hendrix - Pwner of the guitar
As well as him i think that Dave Groll is the greast drummer that lives
Dave Groll - Drumming Demon
Feel free to dis agree, shout yell and even scream. as long as you put up who you think is better, who you think desserves to be in the thread of awsome rock/metelness

I think Hendrix is seriously one of the most overhyped guitarists of all time. He had some cool stuff, but he's definitely not near one of the best in terms of technical skill. I prefer Robert Fripp... His work isn't as catchy, but if you have an ear for technical music, it's amazing.
As for Dave Grohl... Eh, maybe I'd appreciate his drumming more if I didn't despise Nirvana. One of my favorite drummers at the moment is Joey Baron... But he's a jazz drummer not a "rock/metal" one, though he did play in Naked City which is like a jazzcore band.

In my opinion, there are much better drummers out there than Dave Grohl. He doesn't do anything especially amazing that hasn't been done before. That's also coming from a fan of Nirvana. His work with the Foo Fighters hasn't really produced much either, other than a few decent songs. Way too much filler on their albums for me to ever consider any of them legends.
And Hendrix is considered a legend because of the way he completely changed the guitar. Listening to his stuff now does it no justice, as a lot of it is quite common in today's music. Back then, it was completely revolutionary. Of course, that's not saying that Fripp is a bad guitarist at all.

I was reluctant to post, cos it'll make me look like a one trick pony, but:
Lyricist would have to be Roger Waters (From Pink Floyd), as I think I've spent more time digesting what he has to say than any other song writer out there. He has a great knack of cutting straight to the heart of his subject, and provoking thought about it. Shit bass player, though !!
Best band would have to be the Floyd. I've been listening to them for 30 years now, and have never tired of their music. I many ways, their later music became pretty derivative, but they did produce some astonishing music throughout their career. Quite apart from the music, they have also delivered the most spectacular live shows I've seen. But they need the show, cos they are absolutely static musicians.
Most influential band would be shared between the Beatles, & the Stones. The Beatles for pioneering the concept of the artist controlling the creative process. By this I mean writing their own songs, constantly pushing the boundaries of what a band could create, and involving themselves in the studio process & experimenting with the studio being used as another instrument. The Stones not particularly for their music, although a lot of the above re the Beatles would apply, but due to the creation of a blueprint for the attitude, stagecraft, & appearance of rock stars.
Most under-rated band I can think of would be the House of Love. A UK guitar band of the 80s/90s. Never really made any waves, but produced a string of quality albums. Saw them live back in the day, and they were dazzling.

Hendrix was definitely legendary (that doesn't mean they're good, necessarily) and influential. I suppose, then, that it's not fair to speak in terms of technical skill when I refer to "legends" in rock music. A lot of the most influential bands in general aren't necessarily my favorite bands; there are lots of bands that I find immensely influential, though, that I like. They're influential on a personal level. Frank Zappa existed as a musical entity before Hendrix's time, and is arguably as influential to the evolution of rock as he was, perhaps in an indirect way. I'm kind of biased in regard to Zappa, though, because I actually like him. I don't dislike Henrix, though... He's just overhyped.
On a technical level, I'd say that Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle, etc.) is probably the best vocallist ... And my personal favorite for a number of reasons.
I'd say Leonard Cohen is the best lyricist... Or Bob Dylan, though their position in "rock" music is arguable. I've barely delved into their stuff, but it seems really good thus far.
My personal favorite rock band is King Crimson.
I'd say The Velvet Underground is the most influential. Maybe that's just because I like them, though. They were, however, "the first" in a lot of ways.
Most underrated... Hmm. I don't really know. There's quite a few good bands that are underrated.

In my opinion a truly legendary band are Pink Floyd. I have to agree with Tiggy that Roger Waters is an incredible lyricist. All their songs are highly, highly, highly intelligent and thought-provoking. Many people don't like Pink Floyd and I think it's mostly because they don't understand them. In fact I'm listening to 'High Hopes' as I write this and it gives me goose-bumps every time (along with 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond').
Another legendary band is Queen. Not quite as 'sophisticated' as Pink Floyd but nonetheless...

I obviously agree, but there are plenty of intelligent people around who don't like the Floyd, and see the intelligence you mention as pretentiousness.
They're wrong !!
Best Lyricist:
I agree with trbc08 here on Leonard Cohen
Best Band:
They're not the best band on this planet but I'd like to mention Tool here since they were very influencial on me and the music I am listening to today. Also, they're technically not bad (e.g. Danny Carey's drumming).
I think the best that they've released are the EP Opiate and their first full-length album Undertow since I prefer the original lineup with Paul D'Amour instead of Justin Chancellor.
Most Influencial:
Masami Akita aka Merzbow is a musician, author and journalist. He was one of the founding fathers of the japanese noise movement, called "Japanoise" alongside Boredoms (who could easily be reckoned among the legends in here as well) and other musicians and bands.
He has released a shitload of albums (that are listed here) and several books and magazines about music and avant-garde related topics.
Not only is his noise music made by using digital tools or computers but also "handmade" by using microphones and tape loops and stuff.
He has alredy collaborated with myriads of different artists such as Boris, Sunn O))) or Sonic Youth.
Most underrated band?
I'd say Shiva Affect. They were an American band (pretty atypical in that genre) who have made Shoegaze/Dream-Popish stuff in the mid-nineties at the end of the Shoegazeing era.
