What Are You Listening To?

TRAVELING WILBURYS  "volume 1"  cd  1988

cant recall  ever posting this album before??
a supergroup of Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and George Harrison
formed after Harrison's label wanted a b-side to the single "got my mind set on you",
his friends (the other members) were in UK at the time and he called them in to sing on "handle with care",
the label said the song was too good to be a b-side and urged the five to record an album, which they did and the rest is history.
tracks are country-esque, folky, country-rock and americana but this could fit in the rock threads also...
so many great songs on here from the title track to "last night", "end of the line", "tweeter and the monkey man" etc that its impossible to pick a favourite track so i picked one of the bonus tracks from the 2007 box set reissue this time round
album ranks a respectable 2.4 which means...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

previously unreleased George Harrison sung tune:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

TRAVELING WILBURYS  "volume 3"  cd 1990

their second album of two....
and then there was four....(Roy Orbison died not long after the debut was released)
then they decided to bring in Del Shannon for the second album and he died just before they started recording it
and then they were four again....
a good album of bluegrass, folk, country, americana type songs
not real hits off here but still pretty decent
Dlyan sang solo lead on four or five of these and the bridge on three others...
not quite as good as the previous one as they lacked a little spark without the ethereal angelic sounds of Roy Orbison.
back to Del Shannon, they recorded "runaway" as a tribute and it featured as a non album single track sung by Jeff Lynne.
album still rates a decent 2.2 which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

JOHNNY CASH  "american recordings II: unchained " cd  1996

a revisit
his second of six in this Rick Rubin series of albums
his eighty-second career studio album
a collection of covers including several of his own songs,
others include covers from Tom Petty, Soundgarden, Don Gibson, Roy Clark, Dean Martin and Lucky Starr to name a few
good choices of songs here as they seem to lyrically be in line with his own life like they were written by or for him directly
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

fav is the cover of this Tom Petty classic

I watched this doccie on YouTube recently – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6skLoVroiEg&t=5936s - made by Tommy Tedesco’s son. Famously of The Wrecking Crew, as was Glen Campbell before he went solo, as I’m sure you know! Campbell was one of 43 (I kid you not) session musicians plus an entire string section of 15 AND a few more ‘guests’ appearing on Pet Sounds – the Beach Boys themselves hardly played anything – vocals, yes – same with the Monkees and a few others - The Mamas & the Papas, etc. The Wrecking Crew were amazingly competent musicians – absolute pros and they were used extensively by almost everyone for recordings up until bands started getting their act together and actually playing for themselves.

The video is not as long as it appears – half the time shown – also not great quality, but I watched it anyway! Some real characters. I’m amazed to find that Carol Kaye is still around – 90 now. The most prolific bass player ever.  “Wichita Lineman” – there’s something about that song.

LEONARD COHEN  "songs from a room"  cd  1969

a revisit
his sophomore album, fifteen in total, own them all on either cd or vinyl
MH isnt going to like this but lately i find his first three albums monotonous as best
theres nothing wrong with them apart from them all being sparse musically.
i think Cohen's songs were enhanced once he bought in various instruments and band assistance, but thats just me
i also prefer his vocals as he aged also, the deeper, croaky tones suit the narratives IMO
that said, a good album but now i own all of his albums the first three are the ones i go back to least for those reasons

his sixty-sixth studio album overall, third in this Rick Rubin produced series
again, all covers, some obvious choices and some i didnt expect him to cover
either way, another great album, so far the first three are getting better with each release
album would score 2.5 which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
