What Are You Listening To?

POLICE  "ghost in the machine"  cd/vinyl  1981

a revisit
their fourth of five, Lynne and i both own them all
this album has a more dense, claustrophobic, almost 'wall of sound' sound than previous albums
that in return stifles the sound of the album and makes some of the tracks less attractive than they should be
and im sure that is by design with the dark subject matter of the vast majority of it
a really solid album but my second least favourite of theirs, still it clocks in at 2.3 which is pretty darn good.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite track has always been this one:

cool take of the song of Stuart Copeland playing the drums live over a drum free
he is such a cool drummer.

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

POLICE  "synchronicity"  cd/vinyl  1983

a revisit
their fifth and final album
after enjoying "ghost in the machine" yesterday i fancied another random Police album this morning
this one sold around 20 million copies pretty much outselling the other four combined
music is more in line with what Sting would develop on his first solo album (dream of the blue turtles)
theres really nothing to dislike on here even "mother", although kooky, is worth the admission price IMO
album is still my least favourite of theirs but still scores a decent 2.2 which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite Police track of all time:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

love Pat Monahan, hes such a great vocalist
love half of this album and like the remainder which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

favourite is the lead off single:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

sixteen of his best known solo hits wrapped up in this great compilation
three or four i wasnt keen on, most i liked and several i still loved after all these years
album rates a 2.3 which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

superb live performance:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

THE POLICE  "every breath you take: the singles"  vinyl  1986

a revisit
thought i would listen to a compilation after enjoying those two recent studio albums listens
contains eleven of their biggest worldwide hits plus an abysmal reworking of "dont stand so close to me"
they had an incredible string of hits over a six year period and this collection is proof of that
album would rate around 2.8 as a guess which means...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

i posted my fave of theirs last time (every breath you take) so as a random pick:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

THE JAM  "dig the new breed"  cd/vinyl  1982

released in the december of that year as a parting gift to fans in the wake of their split
a live album containing a selection of tracks from various years during their career
i love the raw power and energy of the band on these tracks but it does not flow
this was released the same week as "john lennon collection"
Lennon's sold around 275.000 that week of release and debuted at #1
this Jam album sold 50 yes 50 copies less than the Lennon one and had to settle for #2 on the charts
and as Weller once said, "if i would have known it was that close i would have purchased 51 copies"
anyway, this album is testament to the powerful live performances The Jam gave and even though it chops around
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

favourite:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

LEO SAYER  "1992"  vinyl  2024

released at the back end of 2024 so it went unnoticed by me at the time
a collection of songs recorded around 1992 when he was out of contract
a solid rock album by Sayer and one that i have been listening to several times this last couple of days
tracks are very introverted lyrically as he ponders life with no 'deal'
album would rate a healthy 2.3 and would certainly get higher over time
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

love these two:

"was i blue"  Was I Blue?
"start a fire"  (2) Start A Fire - YouTube

and this one about the the ups and downs of being a musician

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

DAVID BOWIE  "low"  cd  1977

a revisit
the first of the Visconti/Eno trio known collectively as "the berlin trilogy"
admittedly, i used to dislike this album but it has grown on me over the last few listens
still probably slightly too long with at least half the album either instrumental or 'mostly' instrumental but it still works
i dont quite love this album for that reason but its still bloody good rating 2.3 which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite has an almost 'world music' vibe in places:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

DAVID BOWIE  "heroes"  cd,  1977

a revisit
his twelfth studio album
second in the "berlin trilogy"
a deliberate listen after i enjoyed the "low" album so much
another Bowie album that seems to get better with each listen for me
like "low", almost half of the album is either instrumental or tracks with a smidgen of lyrics/words
hints of "low" electronica on here (Duh, Eno was involved), world music in a couple of places but iconic Bowie nonetheless
album comes in at an excellent 2.5 for me which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

lets go for this one on this occasion:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.
