What Are You Listening To?

ROD STEWART "every beat of my heart" vinyl/cd, 1986

from the box set...
his fourteenth studio album...
another album from the midsts of time where my opinion has changed....
ten track, six are rockers, the remainder ballads including a cover of Beatles' "in my life" which i do not care for...
Stewart co-wrote eight of the ten tracks, "love touch" was written by Mike Chapman and obviously the Lennon/McCartney one.
all up though a surprisingly good album i used to dislike.

ROD STEWART "out of order" cd, 1988

from the box-set...
his fifteenth,
first time i heard this album was about ten days ago but i knew the singles as i own three of those on 7" vinyl...
so, eleven tracks, eight credit Stewart as writer or co-writer. one other was written for Stewart, the other two are decades old and could be considered 'great american songbook' songs...
album produced by members of Power Station and the rock songs do have a bit of a similar feel to songs by Power Station.
all up though i find this album a bit underwhelming and flat, not sure if it is the songs themselves or the production.
seven rockers or soft rockers on the album and a handful of ballads and as usual, the ballads are the best tracks...
a very average album and the best tracks for me are the two covers.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

ROD STEWART  "a spanner in the works" cd, 1995

from the box set...
his seventeenth studio set...
a four year layoff between albums to this, the longest of his career to date...
twelve tracks, the first eight are ballads, then three r+b rockers and another ballad to close...
several covers, a couple of self penned tunes and others written for the album by others...
a solid album

ROD STEWART  "when we were the new boys"  cd, 1998

from the box set..
his eighteenth studio album (solo)....
only one self penned tune on here, the rest are covers but to be fair theres only three i am aware of....
interesting to note he covers an Oasis track (cigarettes & alcohol), and a Faces song (ooh la la) which Ron Wood originally sang.
the other one i am familiar with is Nick Lowe's "shelly my love"...
tracks are mixed here as they go from rocker to ballad to rocker to ballad in that order etc....
surprisingly his rockers stand up well against the ballads on here, theyre bluesy and gritty, almost Stones-esque in places...
interesting to note that the three i thought were my favourites throughout were actually the three singles from the album ("ooh la la", "rocks" and the title track)...
that is now three really good latter day albums in arow from Rod, must be in a purple patch of sorts....
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

1:   cigarettes & alcohol  **
2:   ohh la la  ***
3:   rocks  ***
4:   superstar  ***
5:   secret heart  **
6:   hotel chambermaid  ***
7:   shelly my love  **
8:   when we were the new boys  ***
9:   weak  **
10: what do you want me to do?  **

gotta pick this one for the Celtic Folk overtones and the fact it is my favourite Faces tune and Rod nails it!
