Gonna spend the morning plugging away at E&B part 2. The ideas fairy landed sometime in the night and she has left me with a few ideas which I will experiment with today. Then this afternoon I have to do some flooring and general house repairs - been putting this off for a while but will have to get started even though I just don't feel like doing it. Bugger.

Well the ideas fairy came armed to the teeth last night. So many ideas popping out at the moment I don't know where to start. Must remember what I had to eat last night! Been at it since about 1 this morning. Will carry on till lunchtime or so and then go for a walk, then back to normal chores after that and then sift through the initial drafts later tonight - let's see what sticks and what doesn't. Time will tell.

It just struck me that composing is similar to a one night stand - it's all new and exciting and you don't know what's coming next. Or where it's going. It's all spontaneous and unpredictable.

Mixing music on the other hand is like marriage. You have to listen to it over and over and over again, constantly making compromises on the way to achieve the desired result. And even then you are not guaranteed that you're going to get there at all anyway...LOL!

Another thing about composing. It's like cooking a meal. You can have the best ingredients in the world but if you don't know which elements go where and for how long, all you get is sonic soup. For me composing is like architecture for the ears. An aural jigsaw puzzle. You only get an idea of the big picture once most of the pieces are in place. And it's a hell of a lot of fun trying to figure it all out. I have a number of pieces of Ebb & Flow Part 2 in the works but I could not figure out how to get it started - tried 7 different versions but nothing seemed to really work. This morning the solution came out of nowhere. The ideas fairy must have stopped by during the night!

Amazing what a walk in the woods can do. The first movement of Ebb & Flow Part 2 has turned out to be a minimalistic, plaintive, simple melody. Nothing like an amble through the forest to set the mind adrift and empty out all the crap it contains. Not ready to post it just yet. Some tidying up to do first.
