Every time I go on holiday I make a point of buying music from the region - whether folk, ethnic or whatever. I have a collection of about 60 CD's of music from various holidays abroad. The strangest one I ever bought was an avant-garde jazz recording called Specula & Gemini. Now this album is what I call weird jazz max. I just cannot get into this no matter how many times I play it. You have a go - if you can relate to it you are a better person than me. From Italy.

not quite as strange as the cd of Mongolian Throat Singing that my neighbour let me borrow years ago.

KISS "unmasked" vinyl, cd, 1980.
their eighth.
didn't know where to put this one so I decided on 'soft rock'.
very commercial album, the sort of thing parents approved of back in the day.
their commercialism continued their slide in their homeland after the disco-esque "dynasty" album
but at the same time their fanbase increased everywhere else.
album tanked around #40 in the US but made top10 elsewhere.
the singles failed in the US but the lead off single "shandi" made top 10 in other countries.
fractures in the band also, drummer Peter Criss had been sacked a year earlier but still credited here.
Gene Simmons only played on half the tracks because he was pondering his next move also.
fill in drummer, Anton Fig, ended up being the drummer in the Letterman studio band, he's a class act IMO.
album reviews were mixed and when they toured the album they only performed one show in the US on the world tour.
personally, im a big fan of the album I love both Ace and Paul's songs, don't care for Gene's efforts
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
the radio friendly jingle-jangle single:

GEORGE HARRISON "let it roll: songs of George Harrison" cd, 2009
a compilation compiled by widow Olivia.
nineteen tracks in total, just over half were singles, the rest selected favourites of hers.
I guess she's not a fan of "this song", "crackerbox palace", "teardrops" or "you" to name a few???
anyway.
a pleasant listen, its easy to forget how good an artist he was when always being in the shadows of John and Paul.
love the 'slide' and wah-wah' sounds he does with his instrument of choice.
great artist, great writer, great philanthropist and gentle soul.
selected track on this occasion is his final single, has a Travelling Wilbury's feel to it and as usual, meaningful lyrics.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
But I've been traveling on a boat and a plane
In a car on a bike with a bus and a train
Traveling there, traveling here
Everywhere in every gear
But oh Lord we pay the price
With the spin of the wheel with the roll of the dice
Ah yeah you pay your fare
And if you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there
And I've been traveling through the dirt and the grime
From the past to the future through the space and the time
Traveling deep beneath the waves
In watery grottoes and mountainous caves
But oh Lord we've got to fight
With the thoughts in the head with the dark and the light
No use to stop and stare
And if you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there
You may not know where you came from
May not know who you are
May not have even wondered
How you got this far
I've been traveling on a wing and a prayer
By the skin of my teeth, by the breadth of a hair
Traveling where the four winds blow
With the sun on my face, in the ice and the snow
But oooeeee it's a game
Sometimes you're cool, sometimes you're lame
Ah yeah it's somewhere
And if you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there
But oh Lord we pay the price
With the spin of the wheel with the roll of the dice
Ah yeah you pay your fare
And if you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there
I keep traveling around the bend
There was no beginning, there is no end
It wasn't born and never dies
There are no edges, there is no sides
Oh yeah you just don't win
It's so far out, the way out is in
Bow to God and call him Sir
But if you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there
And if you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there
If you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there

PAUL WELLER "illumination" vinyl/cd 2002
soft rock.
his sixth solo set.
in hindsight its my favourite of his.
no experimentation just guitar driven soft rock.
one instrumental which I could put up with as it fits well.
a song or two about his young kids.
a duet with Kelly Jones, vocalist for Stereophonics.
songs with a social conscience, songs of love and of higher powers...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
could pick at least half a dozen off this one to post but chose this rocker...
Everybody doing it
Doing it real good
Everybody knowing it
Like they know they should
Shiny sabres rattling
Long into the night
And everybody saying it
Saying what they like
There are words there to inspire you
There are words there to be heard
Maybe none of them will fire you
But none the less they will make you listen by force.
Everybody shouting it
From every place on high
Everybody loving it
Loving what they find
There's blood upon each handshake
Lies upon each word
And everybody killing it
Killing off what's good
There are holes in the divisions
Between the haves and who have nots
There's a bomb for every city
Now they don't know where to stop.
And they say there's no provisions
There's not enough to go round
But when it comes to the gun there's a bullet for everyone
When it comes to the gun there's a bullet for everyone
Everybody wanting it
Wanting it to stop
The chaos and destruction
The bloodshed on the rocks
The pain and deprivation
The losses and the grief
The tired, worn out promises
Of the politicians' brief
There are holes in the divisions
Between the haves and who have nots
There's a bomb for every city
Now they don't know how to stop.
And they say there's no provisions
There's not enough to go round
But when it comes to the gun there's a bullet for everyone
When it comes to the gun there's a bullet for everyone
When it comes to the gun there's a bullet for everyone

JAMES REYNE "every man a king" cd, 2007
Aussie Rocker,
easy listening/soft rock here.
eighth solo set
failed to chart.
come folk, some country, mainly soft rock though.
my favourite album of his by a long shot,
love just about every track on here.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
favourite, a beautiful ode to his young son.
Standing at the platform, waiting for a train
Better take out your umbrella 'cause it looks like rain
God made the bees and the bees made the honey
God made the man and the man made money
You're the man who cannot dance, who says the band just cannot play
Steady on, little man, you've had a busy day
You've been playing soldiers and marching ones and twos
You've been fighting hard for freedom and scuffing up your shoes
Standing on the flight deck - a powerful sight
And made it thunder at the weak when they don't want to fight
And your war is just like love, it will always find a way
Steady on little man you've had a busy day
You've been playing cowboys letting off a little steam
Sitting tall in the saddle with big hat no cattle and dreaming your ten gallon dream
Hell bound sin-hound blasphemous dream
And another colded Jesus and tangled trinity
Herod made the devil in the salad days
And the blood red carpet guttered gods with feet of clay
And the lion takes your tongue and the wickedness who weighs
Steady on, little man, you've had a busy day
And every stake that fights the fan loses Don Quixote
Steady on, little man, you've had a busy day
Steady on, little man, you've had a busy day
(And a lion takes your tongue...)

I/m a fan of rockabilly and country music and living in the Netherlands - Europe.
I'm listening to a musician named Kees van Bemmel at the moment. He posted some new cellphone recordings on youtube last few weeks.
Kees van Bemmel is a no-nonsense musician who has earned his place in international live music.
Besides the reputation he has built up as a solo musician, he is also no stranger for being the front man of various bands like the Wildcats, Dicemen ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9pOcOFSLUA ), Hot Rock, Ghostriders and more.
With a strong rhythmic guitar playing and on top of that a catchy vocal part, he always manages to attract an audience that loves acoustic songs that are infused with Rock and Roll.

THE GABE DIXON BAND "the Gabe Dixon band" cd, 2008
three piece rock band from Miami
fourth and final album.
bought from a discount bin a few years ago.
piano based tunes here.
sounds a lot like Elton's "honky chateau"/"don't shoot me..." period.
one of those discount bin albums that paid off for sure.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
