What Are You Listening To?
Hell Freezes Over – Eagles

Had not listened to this live album before and now realise I should probably have watched the DVD. Wow! Good job. I’ve heard “Hotel California” a gazillion times, I’m sure, and this version is wonderful – I like the little Spanish flourishes, and the congas, and the bass, and oh – everything really! Strangely, there don’t seem to be many YouTube clips so hopefully this will work …

No concept on this album other than four of the tracks being loosely based on the personalities of the band members. This time around I’m loving “Spirit of the Water” (written by Pete Bardens) and “Air Born” (for Andy Latimer written by himself and Bardens).

A live version of “Spirit of the Water” from the live album Never Let Go, which I really must get hold of! This rendition is not perfect, but it’s absolutely beautiful IMHO … can’t get enough of it. I think it’s Colin Bass singing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfU7XVRX8hA. (The original album version – PB singing … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34y2KcSQ6TY – some strange effects)

And the equally lovely “Air Born” ….

Big Big Train – Merchants of Light

A live album - they play a selection of songs from various of their releases. One of the few newer prog bands I have time for. Their sound is so reminiscent of Genesis, David Longdon even sounds a bit like Peter Gabriel on occasion. They seem to perform well live and certainly have a fabulous line-up. Feels like I’ve been listening all day, lol! Recorded at Cadogan Hall, London during their autumn shows in 2017, it’s a two disc set covering 2 hours and 16 minutes (an hour would have been enough, although things do seem to pick up a bit on Disc 2). I listened online.

BRIAN FALLON "sleepwalkers"

release date: February 9th

chart high: US #42, UK #15

vocalist for Gaslight Anthem...
five albums with them, one under the moniker Horrible Crowes and two
under his own name, I own them all, a consistently good artist overall IMO...
Gaslight's sound is similar to that of their fellow Jersey counterparts E-Street Band,
his solo stuff has a bit more 'soul' to it, to with that pedigree he goes under Classic Rock
for me...
love his raspy vocals, almost reminiscent of Rod at times, especially
the slower more ballady type tunes, still has that Boss sound on the rock tunes...
shame the album is a bit patchy for me, but it still passes the mark

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: Her Majesty's service
best track: forget me not

tracks:

1....if your prayers don't get to heaven ***
2....forget me not ***
3....come wander with me **
4....Etta James **
5....Her Majesty's service *
6....proof of life **
7....little nightmares *
8....sleepwalkers ***
9....my name is the night **
10..Neptune *
11..watson *
12..see you on the other side ***
