![]() IAN HUNTER "ian hunter" cd, 1975: got this one delivered in the mail yesterday... already own a couple of Mott The Hoople albums and a compilation of theirs also, love them so I knew what to expect here.... first up listen... his debut solo set... some raunchy rock and roll... a couple of ballads... and something, which at times has Bowie written all over it in "boy".... Mick Ronson plays lead guitar here... he has such a distinctive style that its just so obvious when he is involved in a project... album peaked at #21 UK, #36 AU and #50 US... "once bitten twice shy" made it to #14 UK and #29 AU... "who do you love" #83 AU... when an album rates this high I try to look for faults that bring the score down... on most occasions I can find reasons but with this album, no such luck... one of the greatest albums of the rock era IMO I LOVE THIS ALBUM sorry, no best track here, love 'em just all about equally but i'll go with "boy" on this occasion tracks: 1....once bitten, twice shy *** 2....who do you love ** 3....lounge lizard *** 4....boy *** 5....3000 miles from here *** 6....the truth, the whole truth, nuthin' but the truth *** 7....it aint easy when you fall/shades off *** 8....I get so excited ** 3s - 6 2s - 2 1s - 0 rating: 2.8

![]() SLADE "you boyz make big noise" cd, 1987 UK Glam-Rocker''s fourteenth and final album.... a good solid album, lots of fist pumping chorus' that youd expect... lots of catchy tunes all round... Noddy Holder's voice is still in fine form (the second greatest UK rock vocalist IMO)... the US music press loved this one, as they did all their albums in the 1980s... I find that strange because during their hey-day of the 1970s they failed to achieve chart success in the US...WTF, stupid Americans!... despite the praise, the album failed to chart in the US, I guess they were infatuated with their "hair bands" back then.... album peaked at a lowly #98 in their homeland and they released five singles from it, but I guess their race was run as a charting rock band... even though the quality material was still there the UKer's were into the likes of Mel And Kim, Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue and Bros etc, they didn't have time for rock and roll anymore!.... I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: we wont give in best track: fools go crazy tracks: 1....love is like a rock *** 2....that's what friends are for *** 3....still the same *** 4....fools go crazy *** 5....shes heavy ** 6....we wont give in * 7....wont you rock with me ** 8....ooh la la in L.A ** 9....me & the boyz *** 10..sing, shout, knock yourself out ** 11..the roaring silence *** 12..its hard having fun nowadays ** 3s - 6 2s - 5 1s - 1 rating: 2.4

KAYAK – Royal Bed Bouncer
![]() Personnel: Max Werner leadvocal – mellotron Ton Scherpenzeel keyboards – vocals Pim Koopman drums – vocals Bert Veldkamp bass – vocals Johan Slager gitars – vocals (^as per liner notes) Just acquired the record – Dutch pressing – from a fellow vinyl dabbler who happens to be from Holland and had a spare copy. Whoop! I like it very much – bit confused by the cover artwork but it’s striking, if not easily interpretable - perhaps it's not meant to be - an antelope in full flight - hmmm. A gatefold with lyrics written in the style of a paragraph under various seemingly random black and white photographs which somehow represent the song below. The title refers to someone who would (back in the days of yore) test the wine for royalty in order to pre-empt any possible poisoning, and also ‘jump’ on the beds to make sure there were no sharp objects or other deadly implements hidden beneath the sheets – unusual subject matter! Homage to those myriad unknown and unheralded who held/hold jobs that might lead to ‘occupational mortality’. Made in 1975, it's not heavily progressive - no epics, although there are some lovely proggy moments reminiscent of Genesis and the like - vocals coloured by a Dutch accent which is rather appealing, IMHO. Great songs, instruments and production – generally regarded as one of their better offerings. Love Ton Scherpenzeel’s keys – he wrote nine of the ten tracks. Some snippets … “Bury the World” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMMgh7BdRU0 “If This Is Your Welcome” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW9mpZ8wgD4 “Chance for a Lifetime” – released as a single … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T81YEb54WeE “Life of Gold” ….

![]() STEVIE NICKS "bella donna" cd, vinyl 1981 Stevie's debut solo set.... I own this one and her 2011 album "in your dreams" which I love.... album opens up with a country tune (the title track)..... shortly after comes the rock ballad with Tom Petty and the album just goes from strength to strength after that... its haunting in places, its ethereal, its rock and roll, its Stevie Nicks, and lets be honest.... they don't make 'em like her anymore.. a rock classic... I LOVE THIS ALBUM least liked track: think about it favourite track: edge of seventeen tracks: 1....bella donna *** 2....kind of woman *** 3....stop draggin' my heart around (with Tom Petty) *** 4....think about it ** 5....after the glitter fades ** 6....edge of seventeen *** 7....how still my love ** 8....leather and lace (with Don Henley) *** 9....outside the rain ** 10..the highwayman *** 3s - 6 2s - 4 1s - 0 rating: 2.6

![]() SLADE "slayed?" cd, 1972: Noddy Holder and boys' third album... the first where they've actually honed their trademark sound... fist pumping chorus lines and simplistic guitar riffs abound... album was their first to hit #1 in their homeland and Australia... also made it to #69 in the US where it spent six months on the chart... four singles off it including the #1 "mama weer all crazee now"... yes, that title is spelt correct, part of their gimmick was to spell words the way they sound when spoken... my favourite of the UK Glam rock bands for sure... I LOVE THIS ALBUM least likeable track: I don' mind favourite track: gudbuy t' Jane tracks: 1....how d'you ride ** 2....the whole worlds goin' crazee ** 3....look at last nite *** 4....I wont let it 'appen agen ** 5....move over *** 6....gudbuy t' jane *** 7....gudbuy, gudbuy ** 8....mama, weer all crazee now *** 9....I don' mind ** 10..let the good times roll/feel so fine ** 3s - 4 2s - 6 1s - 0 rating: 2.4

'Crest of a Knave' by Jethro Tull. Been listening to this in the car most of this last week. An amazing album. A couple of samples - Just love Martin's guitar work on the first track.
