'DS2' by Future.
I'm about to share my thoughts on what I believe to be Future's best album to date, 'DS2' (Dirty Sprite 2) released in 2015.
Before I go any further however, I want to state right now that this is not a thinking-man's album. You won't get any deep or thoughtful revelations from listening to this album, and you may not even learn anything of value from the lyrics. I found that this is purely just a fun album to listen to, and the experience it gives you is pleasing to the most primal and simple parts of the mind. I don't mean to make it sound like I'm dumbing this album down or degrading the artist's talent, because I still believe that art comes in many forms, and this is truly an entertaining project from the Atlanta rapper. So I'll just hop into it right now, as to why I think this is not only just an enjoyable album, but in my opinion Future's best to this day.
The true beauty and enjoyability behind this record lies within the production. It's clean, crisp, and filled with magical sounds. It's amusing to me that the album's title, cover-art, and lyrics behind many of the songs are not only about, but FUELED by the drug: 'lean', and yet just the mere sound of the instrumentals and production on this album itself will make you feel high. The beats are solid and hard-hitting; and the overall sound throughout the album is extremely ambient, atmospheric, and mystical. For one example; the song 'Thought It Was A Drought' is filled with eerie and transcendental sounds, paired up with a very solid and head-bobbing beat. I found while listening to this project that the otherworldly sounds in many of the songs had my mind drifting off and putting me in Future's shoes, as if I found myself in the center of a bustling strip-club during a codeine-soaked stupor.
As for the lyrics on the tracks, they are surely secondary to the instrumentals. I'm not saying you should completely ignore or disregard them; they are very entertaining, fun, and at times humorous, however they are simply not the source of this album's glamour or appeal. Many of the lines can be repetitive and simple, although to be fair I didn't expect a drug-induced Future to write anything too philosophical in the first place. Many of the songs are purely about sex, money, and drugs. Nothing too out-of-the-ordinary for a rapper to discuss, but the simplicity behind the album combined with it's beautiful sound is what allured me.
This record is packed with a whopping 18 songs, and there wasn't a single one of which I didn't enjoy some part of. Some of the best tracks in my opinion are 'Thought It Was A Drought', 'Colossal', 'Blood On the Money', 'The Percocet & Stripper Joint', 'Kno The Meaning', and of course the extremely heavy 'F*ck Up Some Commas'.
