What Are You Listening To?
Oceansoul Wrote:The Doobie Brothers! I like them. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m4tJSn0QtME

Two of my favourite Doobie numbers - https://youtu.be/Mz7ylSy221M

And this one is really brilliant - https://youtu.be/MCjhk2fJp7U - Afterglow music. Tiran Porter did a brilliant job putting this one together.
'The purpose of life is a life of purpose' - Athena Orchard.

Elton John - The Diving Board

His most recent but one album.

After being an obsessed Elton fan up to about 1975, like many others I got off the bus after Blue Moves and, except for The One, never bothered with any later studio albums. This one however got good reviews, and I must admit the cover gave me a good impression, suggesting that perhaps a little more thought and effort had gone into this one.

It's a decent album - not a great album in the way Elton John (the self-titled one), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road or Caribou are great, but there is quality here, and he is as good as ever on the piano; moreover the production gives the album a very full but clear sound, making the most of that piano.

He is sounding a little more experimental again, evoking memories of Blue Moves, with songs like My Quicksand, The New Fever Waltz, and the title track. There is maybe a bit too much stylistic similarity between some of the songs, making it hard to mentally separate them after listening; a couple of fast rockers would not have gone astray.

Worst tracks: Take This Dirty Water, Kids In the Candlelight

Best tracks: Oscar Wilde Gets Out, The New Fever Waltz

Overall rating: 7/10, maybe 8/10

Thanks for reminding me.
At the same time you left EJ I found him, or at first I was attracted by the cover of the Captain Fantastic album, I was five when it was released and as I understand it directly entered #1 on Billboard album chart (as the first ever)
This one was my fav, and I still like it

You know what - that song is one of my favourite EJ tracks too, one of the standout cuts off that album.

When I say I got off the bus about 1975, it was probably a couple of years later. Capt. Fantastic is a fine album, as is Blue Moves, but there is not much he has done since then IMO that lives up to the standards of those early years. I even prefer his debut Empty Sky, rough and raw though it is, to most of his post-1980 work.

But I definitely prefer the compact and massive sound the studio version brings out. Those live versions I've heard are good but not near as good as listening directly on the vinyl (or CD) in good phones.

Well, I can't pass judgment on the live version, because that clip won't play in my country. Smile
