all I own by Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan for that matter are compilation albums, both are fantastic albums but I feel I need to explore both
back catalogues further with some studio albums at some point.

THE EAGLES "on the border" cd, 1974

career stats:
studio albums.............7
singles......................29

this album.....................#17 US...#27 AU...#12 CAN..#28 UK
singles:
"already gone"...............#32 US.................#12 CAN
"James Dean"................#77 US.................#56 CAN
"best of my love".............#1 US...#14 AU.....#1 CAN

Eagles' third and yet to really make the big time (as per high charting albums)...
bit more of a rock feel happening on this one as opposed to the more country flavoured
sounds of their first two albums....
so, it appears they were trying to get 'heavier' with a rock sound yet, the biggest hit off the
album was still pretty country sounding to me...
like the previous two and "hotel California" there is very little to criticise on this one,
only thing I really could knock is the clichéd, corny lyrics in the James Dean song, apart from that,
this is another classic album from the band IMO...

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

worst track: James Dean
best track: the best of my love

1...already gone ***
2...you never cry like a lover ***

"lyin' eyes"..................#2 US..#31 AU...#19 CAN...#23 UK
"take it to the limit"......#4 US..#30 AU...#16 CAN...#12 UK

Eagles' fourth studio album and the one that really catapulted them into "the big time"...
more o their soft rock sounds on here as evident by the singles...
one instrumental, Journey Of The Sorcerer, some nice banjo work on this one, and enough variation
to keep me interested for the full six minutes of it...
Bernie Leadon wrote the final track on the album, "i wish you peace", it was written for his then girlfriend's
father Ronald Reagan who disowned his daughter after she moved in with Leadon out of wedlock...
band received a Grammy for "lyin' eyes" for best rock vocal performance also...
album was slated by a lot of music reviewers and, the remainder seemed to give it a luke warm reception,
either way it was their biggest seller to date and their first US #1 album...

This was the album where I started to think the Eagles were getting into a rut. I thought Lyin' Eyes was a boring song; although it's in much the same style as songs like Tequila Sunrise, the tune itself seems incredibly banal by comparison with that former song.

Journey of the Sorceror is a great instrumental. It was used as the theme for the radio adaptation of Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy; I dare say a lot of people became familiar with it without knowing the name of the track or who was performing it.

I still have my souvenir program of Elton John's concert at Wembley Stadium in 1975, at which the Eagles were one of the support acts, along with the Beach Boys, Rufus with Chaka Khan, and Joe Walsh, who at that stage had not yet joined the Eagles. I quote from the booklet:

Quote:One of These Nights...finds the band hitting a powerful new stride. .........Or, as Don Henley puts it, "We're no longer that pretty little country band with high-flying harmonies."
Well, that was their take on it. Personally it was those pretty little harmonies that I liked about the early Eagles material. Songs like Take It to the Limit might have been good as stadium rockers, but they left me with a feeling of "heard it all before".

----------------------------------------------------

Way before he was in The Eagles, Bernie Leadon played as a session musician on Bob Lind's 1971 album "Since There Were Circles". Lind has said that out of everyone present, Bernie was the only one there who was not stoned or drunk out of his mind. Now THAT'S professionalism.

THE EAGLES "the long run" vinyl/cd 1979

career statsConfusedtudio albums........7
singles..................................29

this album..........#1 US...#1 AU...#1 CAN...#4 UK
singles:
"heartache tonight"...............#1 US...#13 AU...#1 CAN...#40 UK
"the long run"......................#8 US.................#9 CAN...#66 UK
"i cant tell you why"..............#8 US.................#5 CAN

The Eagles' sixth and final album before their capitulation....
a more pop sound on here IMO, and a greater use of synthesisers....
gone are the beautiful harmonies that were all over their early albums...
after this one they recorded a live album in 1980, none of the band members
were together for the mixing process everything was done via Fed Ex-ing eachother...
I think the overall sound is pretty lousy, the songs are generally weak and the whole thing sounds
uninspired, there is nothing on this one that I can honestly say that I love which is total contrast to
what is on their previous album...
I bought this one on vinyl as a youngster and hated it then which is probably why, for years, I shied
away from anything to do with their music...
apparently, the album was supposed to be a double vinyl set but they whittled it down to a single album...
as one American reviewer commented..."if this is the best of what they had, imagine how bad the leftovers
are that failed to make the finished album!"
as a footnote, they managed a Grammy for "heartache tonight" and still sold several million copies worldwide
so I guess they couldn't care less what the critics thought...
so,
ive already posted "hotel California", which I love and their comeback album "the long road out of eden", which barely makes
the grade for me (very good first disc, lousy second disc IMO...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM
