compilation of b-sides
not that anybody knew the a-sides
the single, which I guess had to have gone from being a b-side to being an a-side
but I can't d-side for sure

US alt-rock band...
6th album.....
bought this one because it charted high on the 'experts' 'end of year' lists...
"American beauty/American psycho", hmmm, wonder if theyre referring to the two
leading candidates in the current US Presidential nominations race!!!!!
sometimes it works when I do this, other times it doesn't, this time it does....
never took much notice o them previously bet the single Uma Thurman pricked up my ears....
not a great album but pretty good and consistent....
their back catalogue probably needs being re-evaluated now!
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

with all the a-side/b-side humour that reminds me of an actual "b-side" of a Style Council single from the late 1980s...
it was an instrumental and is a play on words from the old English ditty "i do like to be beside the seaside",
the song title was "i do like to be b-side the a-side"

DAVID BOWIE "hunky dory" cd, 1971
career stats:
studio albums.............27
singles......................120
this album..................#3 UK...#44 US...#39 AU
singles:
"changes"................#49 UK...#41 US...#80 AU
"life on mars"............#3 UK.................#67 AU
Bowie's fourth album and one I bought last year but forgot about....
quite the eclectic range of styles on here...
from the straight foreward pop of "changes" through the complexities of "life on mars", the almost vaudevillian sounds of "kooks"
and on to the occasional abstract nature of "Andy Warhol", and the Dylan impersonation on "song for Bob Dylan"...
"lodger" from 1979 and this one are my two "go to" albums by Bowie which obviously means...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
worst track: Andy Warhol
best track: life on mars
tracks:
1...changes ***
2...oh, you pretty things ***
3...eight line poem **
4...life on mars ***
5...kooks ***

FLEET FOXES "fleet foxes" cd, 2008
career stats:
studio albums..........2
singles....................8
this album................#36 US...#3 UK...#90 AU
singles:
white winter hymnal.....#77 UK
he doesn't know why.... no chart action
your protector.............#51 UK
debut set...
I own both of their albums, plus the two Father John Misty albums...
I guess this leans towards folk in a lot of ways....
lots of layered Beach Boy-esque harmonies....
can get a bit boring after a while, ie: monotonous at times....
doesn't fare as well as it did when I bought it...
Father John Misty albums have a bit more variation and, I guess he learnt
from his days in the band that diversity is the key to longevity...
not a bad album, am looking foreward to hearing how their second album rates
and fares over the last few years when it comes out to play...

AUSTRALIAN CRAWL "sirocco" vinyl/cd 1981
career stats:
studio albums...............4
singles........................17
this album....................#1 AU
singles:
"things don't seem"............#11 AU
"errol"..............................#18 AU
"oh no, not you again:"......#58 AU
Aussie band's sophomore set....
album title was taken from the name of Aussie actor Errol Flynn's yacht...
theres even a song on here called "errol", which is a tribute to the swashbuckler....
cool lightweight pop on here, they called it "80s surf pop/rock" back in the day, but I didn't!....
good catchy stuff on here IMO....
and to show how big these guys were over their short lifespan of four albums, in the end of year
charts tally for 1981 this was the second biggest selling album in Australia after Lennon's "double fantasy"
and ahead of AC/DC's "back in black" (third place)...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM:
worst track: love beats me up

MY MORNING JACKET "the waterfall" cd, 2015
career stats:

singles.................14
this album................#11 US...#20 CAN...#42 UK...#48 AU
singles:
"big decisions"............. no chat action
"spring"...................... no chart action
"compound fractures"... no chart action
seventh and most recent outing from these guys from Louisville, Kentucky....
their guitar driven extended overblown guitar solos and dreamy vocals upon
lengthy songs ala Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been replaced by more radio friendly,
commercially accessible three, four and five minute almost pop songs on this one....
their other albums are good if youre a fan like I am, but this one is for everyone IMO....
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
worst track: thin line
best track: compound fracture

Australian Crawl are responsible for one of my favourite mondegreens:
